  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Can God Commit Suicide?

Is god capable of non-existence? Does he have the ability to zap himself into non-existence?
I hate these types of questions. "Can God make a rock so heavy that he can't lift?". How can a being that is never ending, can never die, kill itself? It can't. It has no reason to, thus it have never even thought of it, as it can never happen.

If so, how would we know, or could we even know if god ceased existing? Could god have ceased existing a while ago but we just don’t know yet?

What do you suppose would be some of the repercussions if god ceased existing?
All of Existance would cease to be. God's very will is sustaining existance, so if there was no God, then there would be nothing. The simple fact that we exist now is proof to me that God is still there. ^.^

God's omnipotence does not consist in what he could do and does not but in what he actually does, in his working in all things.

I think may be Calvin's view - if someone knows could he provide support or refuation please?

We need a definition of god to work this out with.
Otherwise we have people arguing about YHVH, Odin, the Lord and Lady, some vague Deity, etc etc

In other words "erase his existence"? Killing a being may not be seen the same way as erasing the existence of a being

Of course, IMO, thes last 3 questions are dependent on the answers to my replies in this post.

Well could God make a rock so heavy that he could not lift it? Could God simeoutaneously do and not do an action in the same respect? Many Christians would argue that no he could not, but this does not impinge upon omnipotence, because omnipotence only entails the ability to do any action, and any any action which is self-contradictory (such as the above two) is not really an action at all and therefore not necessary for omnipotence. I'd imagine that God comitting suicide could be viewed in the same manner; if God is necessarily an eternal being that it would be a contradiction for him to cease to exist. But that doesn't necessarily mean that he is not omnipotent.

He's not bound to them. He is fullfilling them. :)
Besides that fact there are a few things that God can't do. He can't lie, He can't learn, and he can't affect free will.
