  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It depends on the type and strain of influenza. Bordatella (Kennel Cough) is a form of influenza that dogs commonly get, though it's usually not fatal unless it turns into pneumonia. I know that cats can get bird flu, but I haven't heard reports of dogs getting it.

Depending on the symptoms, your dog could have any number of things. Kennel cough starts with a cough, can move to runny nose and eyes, sore muscles, and in general, the symptoms are pretty similar to human flu. Most likely, your dog got the vaccine for this, but it's not 100% effective, or even close. It's generally not serious, but it can turn into pneumonia which is serious. You can give your dog cough medicine for this. I believe it's Robotussin that's recommended, but always best to get a diagnosis from your vet before giving anything and make sure that what you're giving is safe.

Parvo is particularly nasty. It's more common in puppies and unvaccinated dogs, but there have been break outs of it throughout the country this year. Parvo will kill a dog with no treatment and treatment can be very expensive. The vaccine is usually given as a combo at the vet, but again, the vaccine is not 100% effective

Then there's distemper, starts with a fever, you may see a cough, runny nose, vomiting, possibly some eye inflammation. Like Parvo, it's viral, so you have to treat the symptoms and wait for the virus to run it's course. It can also cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord in many dogs. Most dogs don't actually die from the virus itself, it's usually from a complication or a secondary bacterial infection. This has also been seen around the country this year.

Ok, hope I didn't scare you too much. I would say go to the vet as soon as possible. It may just be a simple URI (upper respiratory infection), but you never know.

Great responses-thanks, everyone!

Dagna, I'm still trying to figure out her tummy problem. My vet said to put her on the antacid and it works every time, but then right when I think everything is fine, she's belching and getting picky about her food again. So I give her the meds and she's eating like a horse. But since I've been sick, I wondered if she somehow got my flu because she was throwing up.

But, when I first got her, what they didn't tell me is that she had been on doxycyclene, for heaven knows what. I'm wondering if she had the kennel cough since I did buy her from a pet store. She coughs from time to time. Lately she makes wierd noises that I guess is belching. I don't know what else it could be, but it isn't something I immediately recognize. :sigh:

Have you tried changing your dog to a different food? My Mom has three cats that can only eat Iams cat food. If you give them cheaper food, they get sick and tend to have digestive problems.

To help with her stomach, you can feed her boiled hamburger and rice. It's easy on their stomach and most dogs can usually keep it down. What kind of food are you feeding her? She may have a sensitive stomach and not be able to keep some of the commercial foods down well. I had a couple dogs that would throw up occasionally because of the food they ate. I switched and they stopped pretty quickly.

I'm not surprised about the doxycycline, most pet stores give antibiotics to the dogs that come in as they generally come with some pretty nasty diseases. Also, vets sometimes prescribe antibiotics when dealing with kennel cough to help prevent secondary bacterial infections.

From what you're describing it sounds like kennel cough. I would call your vet and find out what cough medicine you can use to ease the symptoms. My pyrenees made noises very similar to the ones you are describing when he had kennel cough. It would come out as kind of a wierd belch/cough thing, and then up would come the food. Pretty nasty, but he got over it after a little while.

Hi, Holly! Thanks for your reply. I've given this gal everything from Alpo to Nutro, chicken and rice, peas, grape tomatoes with parmesan cheese, bananas, tuna, olives, beans...I'm ready to pull my hair out. She begs for everything but eats almost nothing. Although albacore tuna and Spaghetti-os seem to suit her okay, but I can't feed her those every night. I don't know what to do with her diet. Good idea-maybe I'll try the Iams. :sigh:

Hi, Dagna! Thanks for your suggestion. And thank God we have both of those things in our house, in abundance. She seems to have a sensitive tummy-I hope I don't have to go through this her whole life! Maybe she had a relapse or something with the kennel cough. It does seem to reappear every now and again. You're right-I'll have to take her in again.

Parvo is very very serious, never mess with parvo. I must disagree with the person who said a dog that gets parvo and isn't treated will die from it.
a lot of vets don't give a kennel cough vaccine unless its requested by the owner. It can only be spread by comming in contact with a dog that has it, which is why most boarding Kennels require a bordatella vaccine.
The coughing normally goes away in about 10-14 days, and until then you can give it cough syrup (anything with a DM in it). Because bordatella is a virus, if the dog gets in once it can never get it again.
If she isn't keeping any food down, i would worry about her possibly having a blockage in her stomach on intestines

ah yes. Kennel caugh is most contagious and should be given to animals before the are boarded at any kennel (lol yeah go figure) the vacc lasts a year so it isn't that bad. we always used the one that goes in the nose. Sorry just had to post. worked at a vets office for several years ;)

Thanks for the tip-I'll have to check her records and see where she is with that.
