• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I really don't know anything about autism, but my cousin's 2 1/2 year old son was just diagnosed with it. His father died and he had been acting kind of strange and now months later they have diagnosed him with it. I was just wondering if there is any chance that it could have been caused by the feelings he felt from his father dying? I am really clueless on all this. Any comments are appreciated. Thank you and God Bless.

Autism is a neurological, not an emotional disorder. The causes are genetic, not situational.

I really doubt it. This boy was probably already autistic to begin with, but this tragedy made his autism apparent.

Emotional strain in a person any size ,age , or gender, can cause or reveal nutritional deficiencies and may result in just about any diagnoses including a. The bodies ability to handle mercury is very much an issue(see lawsuits won by parents or guardians for the last 50 years due to mercury causing a number of different conditions). Also, look up at shirleyswellnesscafe online the people who found relief by strengthening their immune system nutritionally (it is staggering how much difference it makes). curezone is more controversial, mostly because they're more blunt, but it's worth taking a look there also.
the genetic issues are also genetic dispositions requiring more or less of different basic building blocks of the body/immune system/nervous system... this has always been true but talking about genetics vs health is a newer approach(and way more profitable) than talking about diet(as in the Bible).

Kanner's, the more severe type of autism, is usually immediately self-evident. Asperger's is not always so obvious. A trauma like this would not produce this condition, but it might call more attention to it because of the lack of "normal" empathy.

We DO feel emotions. My more intense ones seem to roll over me in waves. Grief, shame, passion, jubilation, failure, excitement, rejection, approval; when I look back, in hindsight, they make perfect sense, but, at the time, they seemed overwhelming.

It is a real disorder and not a disorder that just shows up due to emotional stress. It's a non functioning part of an Autistic's brain contrary to the badgering of talk radio-show host Michael Savage has created.

We Aspies, unlike our Kannerian cousins, can mimic a lot of NT behaviors, however. Incidences, like the one in the OP, tend to throw a spotlight right onto us.

Autism exists from birth. It can't be developed later in life. He may be developing chilshood depression. You should suggest to his mother that he sees a child psyciatrist.

Asperger's appears to [exist from birth], but the jury is still out on Kanner's [classical autism].
