hi, i asked this same question in the 'outreach' section and got some pretty negative responses, that nothing a person does without faith pleases God, that all our good deeds mean nothing to him if we are not believers. i was just wondering what you guys thought, so if a non-believer does a completely selfless act, and shows kindness and compashion to another person, can it please God?

Hi BF,

" I was just wondering what you guys thought, so if a non-believer does a completely selfless act, and shows kindness and compassion to another person, can it please God?"

Of course, if God can be pleased. This assumes that God, spirit and Creator, is pleased or displeased by the actions of humans.

Hello bunnysfriend.

I believe that god created all life, and that life was designed to do as god intended. Therefore, all please god whenever they do as they should. Meaning that when they follow their path, they are pleasing god.

Namaste,

+Jay

How could this NOT please God???

How sad that some of people you posted to have such a petty mean God that wouldn't give a rat's patooty is someone loved their neighbor.

I believe that people who fight against social inequalty, love their neighbour, give to the poor etc etc are doing God's work and God will be pleased with them.

There's a parable in one of the gospels . . . can't remember which (pregnancy has turned my brain to mush) about sheep and goats, Jesus talks about dividing people, the sheep are the ones who in brief, were nice to people and helped others and Jesus says when you helped the least of these you helped me, he doesn't say one thing about whether they believed or not though some people interpret the fact that these people are called the righteous to mean they are believers but IMO that's pie in the sky.

You will be told that God is only pleased with the actions of 'believers' because there are those who want christianity to be an exclusive little club which holds the sole rights to salvation and access to God. I don't think God can fit into that little box though.

Yep...

I always liked John's view about those who love each other are living in the light:

1 John 2
"He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes."

yeah thats what i thought too. but they said only christians can please God, anything good a non-christian does is bad because its not done in faith, or something like that. i prefer the responses i got here.

I'm gonna give you my answer then read the others so if I repeat something someone else said, I am sorry.

Jesus wasn't a Christian, and he was pleasing to God... as was Abraham, David, John the Baptist... and many many others... including my first dog, Mopsey who was a beautiful English Setter.

I think animals do nothing but God's will...

Seriously, I don't see the importance of labels to God.

If you consider the parable of the good Samaritan, here is great evidencee that God cares about what we do to others and how we treat other people rather than our nation, church or personal beliefs. Who is your neighbor? The Christian or he who helps?

from Family Bible Notes:
"The love which the law of God requires, leads those who have it to do good, not merely to their friends
or countrymen, but, as they have opportunity, to all, in imitation of Him who makes his sun to rise on
the evil and on the good, and sends his rain on the just and on the unjust, and "who, though he was
rich, for our sakes became poor, that we through his poverty might be rich."
... this is me now...
If we would love others that are not "like us" would not God show even greater love to them?
What greater love can one show but to give your life for your friends... "you are my friends if you do what I command you..."

Jesus gave his life for his friends... those that do what he commands. Love one another, love God. Preach the good news of the kingdom of heaven... it is here! It is not up there someplace!

it is believed strongly by many christianity that the idea of "works" that please god is very wrong, so they go to the other extreme and say that only faith can please god. this is of course a very extreme and black-and-white way of looking at things. but you can see why they think what they do.

it would be interesting to ask these people how, if they would obviously be touched by an act of kindness, how they would reason that somehow god wouldnt be. are they better than god? do they have the spirit of god in them?

Ah well I would suppose that none of us measure up to Gods ideal... and so we rely on God in order to please God... we rely on God's grace, love, understanding, empathy and overwhelming acceptance. Especially as that is what we are now owed thanks to Jeebus' cross-stuffs.

Now, as to whether we seek, recognise and follow God is a different matter. That is something anyone can do! Otherwise, why would God desire all to be saved?

Dear bunnysfriend, every time when we are doing God`s Will, it will please Him, but He wants our love freely given to all we meet, God wants us to BE His children, to love Him and love each other. God in Jesus, gave His life on the cross, to reconcile us to Him, He paid the price for our transgressions, He made it possible to be God`s Own again. If we repent, exchange our selfish, unloving and unkind natures, into selflessly loving and caring ones, we will become as God wants us to be. Jesus will help and guide us, if we ask Him, and He has kept that promise to many men and women. And when you know Jesus as your loving friend, you will gladly follow, and become His friend. I say this humbly and kindly, bunnysfriend, and send greetings. Emmy, sister in Christ.
