  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

How many calories should I be burning if I am trying to loose weight? I usually burn about 700 or more...
I weight around 150 and need to loose about 10lbs.
Thanks

10 lbs x 3500 calories in a pound of fat = 35 000 calories that you need to lose. At 700 calories burnt in exercise and if everything was even (i.e. you ate as many calories as you spent otherwise), you would need to do this exercise 50 times.

Keep in mind that in order to maintain 140 you'll need to eat just a little less a day when you get down there since your body will be a smaller to run and your metabolism will go down.

Yes, 3500 c in a pound. You want to aim for 1-2 lbs a week. But, with a healthy life long eating style and a good fitness plan that includes strength training and aerobic activity, your metabolic rate will increase. The more active you are, the more calories you need.
Example, we need approx. 1200-1500 calories a day just to live, sitting on the couch, breathing, blinking, digesting etc. If you are very active, then you need more. I need approx. 2600 calories/day when I work, just to maintain my weight and keep my energy levels up (metabolism). This link will show you your BMR. On a day when you are not active, then your body requires less calories. BUT if you have increased your lean body tissue and changed and improved your body composition, then your metabolism is increased. Muscle requires more calories that fat.

This is a copy and paste from an article I read ~ Lifting weights increases your calorie-burn in other ways too. In one study, 15 sedentary people in their 60s and 70s who strength trained 3 days a week for 6 months increased their daily calorie-burn by more than 230 calories. Almost one-third of the increase was from a boost in their metabolism due to the muscle they gained.~

Check out this link: http://www.bestdallaspersonaltrainer.com/basil-metabolism-calculator.html

Becoming fit increases your metabolism and after a good workout, keeps that metabolic motor running!

Hope this helps, J

I hope your leaning towards increasing your physical activity in some fun way over pure caloric restriction? =)

You should figure out what your Basal Metabolic Rate is and from there can adjust your caloric intake to help realize your goals. Getting active is truely the best way to approach the situation and not worry about what you "shouldn't" be eating. Consider overall changes to your lifestyle and I think you'll have the best chance of success.

For the past couple years I've taken a hiatus from casual internet usage aside form business and email J. But it is hard to turn one's back indefinately on the greatest little corner on the internet; and, most importantly, the relationships that have develope here over the years. How have you and the family been doing?

Good to hear things are still well J. Yep, I'm still in S'toon living, working and riding. The separation of those three is subtle. Cycling is going well in all its aspects, although racing seems to be the only one that matters to people. ;) So I play along, to varying degrees. Won a few races, lost a few and am now in the process of expanding my interests into duathlons and triathlons. Coaching is coming along and the bike shop continues to grow. Should be a hectic spring, both training wise and work. :) Why I can almost smell the flowers and green grass already... heh.

Interestly enough the shop has just changed ownership as of March 1 passing from "Bruce's" hands to our shop manager's "Neil" and "Cory's." Bruce is looking to retire in the next couple years and, despite struggling with Parkinson's disease, show's up day in and day out along with training with us year around. I am a relatively recent addition to the shop as of a couple years ago. What drew me to it was the people, their attitude(s) towards cycling/racing/customer service and their vision for the future. Getting paid to relate to a potential customer how wonderful riding on a quiet summer evening with a group of friends hardly seems like work. Neither is taking a group of 12 year old boys/girls out mountain biking to learn some trail skills for a few hours in the evening. I however, particularly like training the older "master" athletes. Its wonderful to see the child that remains on the inside of most people, despite that time does to our outer shell. On a bike age differences seem to vanish... as cycling is 85% mental right? ;)

Currently we are pretty focused on cycling and its related products. We have a growing selection of cycling related clothing, lights, bags, trainers, locks as well as usual high end "fun stuff" that people love to handle if not immediately own. We are however also starting to expand more into winter sports such as skiing, snowshowing and ski-walking etc.

Heart rate monitors are also a growing area of interest as they allow people to more finely tune their training over just "perceived effort." Polar makes some fun tools including one I have now that allows for a infrared connection with your PC and comes with software to create/download and guide you through workout sessions. The absolute best part though is the graphical representation and workout summary/dairy. It correlates time vs HR vs altitude vs distance etc. Total caloric expenditure is another important tool I've found.

Other area's of note are our sponsored athletes, club(s), our own social club (BCW), and coaching on the individual and larger group workouts/training camps held throughout the year.

Equipment wise, as a store contracts must be made with suppliers who at the same time want to protect their existing accounts. Moving into new segments of the sporting world takes time and patience, but with all the XC-skiers, speed-skating, kiters, runners etc associated with the store one could imagine their being alot of potential for further growth should the environment and conditions present themselves. :crossrc: Right now our limiting factors are space, money and information/time. The desire to succeed is... formidible.

ps: Being smaller doesn't necessarily mean your metabolism will be slower. Hopefully with regular exercise and good nutrition your caloric needs may actually grow in the coming weeks/months. Body composition is a better way of monitoring body fat loss as a standard scale doesn't tell the whole story. There are some great new body compositions scales around but I don't have alot of experience with them and everything I've heard is hear-say, good albeit. ;) Perhaps fitmom has more to say on the subject.

I weight around 150 and need to loose about 10lbs.
Thanks

I could give you a bunch of numbers but personally I think with the final 10 lbs. to lose it is more about exercise to have fun, to be fun in and of iteself.

That final 10, for me at least, seemed like such an elusive goal. I just continued to run and hike and ski and stuff and eventually, maybe even over a six months or more or so, and it came off.

Best of luck.

u need to be buring about 1000 calories a day by working out
Well in my post I meant to CUT 3500 cal a week and also being on a healthy diet and of course exercise. But you can just lose body fat with a clean diet and very little exercise diet I feel is like 80-85% of it.
