hmm tricky. The movie is worth a look as it covers stuff for the non fan. I also recommend the 9th and 10th Doctor series fairly watchable

If you want to look at the history of the show 1st and second doctor stories are worth a look. They have recently released on DVD the first three episodes, Unearthy Child, Edge of destruction and the Daleks. Unfortunately the Beeb had a clear out in the 70s and many early episodes are now lost though Tomb of the Cybermen was recently unearthed and restored. I guess its every Hard core Dr Who fans dream to find a missing episode.

In regard to new fans to the show what does everyone else think for suitable episodes?

Good question MN John!

I think "The 5 Doctors" is good as it brings the first 5 doctors together, as well as 5 of their companions, as well as many of their foes.

I think starting with the first episode is a good place to start. I started with the 5th doctor, and it wasn't too bad. I think that one can really start anywhere, but should make an attempt to understand who and where the Doctor has been in the past (and future :p )

I have
  • Trial of a Time Lord
  • The Keys to Time
  • The Five Doctors
  • The Aztecs
  • The Resurrrection of the Daleks
  • The Dalek Invasion of Earth

(and the next time I go to Sam's Club, I will get more. :) )

I agree with your list especially keys to time series and trial

I recently found a complete video version of Dalek invasion of the earth also a quality story from the Hartnell years.

We have ALL of them somewhere, even the Harkness to end of the Pertwee years. My husband swears he didn't miss taping a single episode. It's just that they are 'buried' somewhere in the house and getting to them would be unbelievably difficult. Sigh...

I have quite a few taped from a long time ago, and I have even tried to watch them, but our current VCR isn't reading the tapes very well, and I have a lot of interference, or just plain blue screen. :sigh:

Dvd killed the video star huh?

I hope they find the missing episodes of Power of the Daleks one day. I'll be first in line to buy that one>

I don't know that I am familiar with that one. Which Doctor is/was it?

I could go look in my library (I have every single old Doctor's novelization.)

Are they novelizing the new Doctor's stories?

It's the first episode of Patrick Troughton's run, immedeatly after the regeneration. I'd love to see it too, just to find out how they did the reaction to the Doctor's transformation, because back then no one would have had a clue what was going on. There's a good novelisation of it by John Peel, if you can find that.

Dr Who wins three awards at TV Awards last night.

For the second year running Dr Who has won best drama, best actor for David Tennant and best actress for Billie Piper. The series won the same categories last year with billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston winning Best actor and actress.

Great news!

Though in the past, Dr. Who would never have been considered a drama. It would have only fallen into the sci-fi category. And I don't know how Britain votes on sci-fi shows. The US rarely awards sci-fi with any of the "good" awards.

Though it was originally written to be a sci-fi show, the producers wanted to make it educational, so they agreed to alternate and do every other show (story) a sci-fi one, and every other one an educational one. And it continued on that way through most of the second Doctor, and after that, it became almost completely sci-fi. They did do occasional historical stories in the 4th and 5th Doctor's tenures, the last one (of the old shows) being The Black Orchid, with the 5th Doctor.

One of my favorites with the 4th Doctor was the Masque of Mandragora.
