So, for those who saw it, what did you think of Torchwood? One thing's for certain, I won't be letting my 11 year-old Who fanatic son watch it!

Why?

On another note, I loved the episode shown on Friday. We haven't seen an historical one since Black Orchid with Peter Davison. It was cool!

It would be great if they brought back that aspect of the show on a more regular basis.

I watched the first two episodes of Torchwood on BBC 3 definitely not one for the kids...hence the late night slot but enjoyable none the less.

Girl in the fireplace...what did you think? One of the more surreal episodes I have seen.
I liked it. But I thouoght that the Doctor was particularly
absent-minded not to realise that at least 6 years could pass and not to rememebr that Mme. du Pompodour died at 43.

I like the "Girl in the Fireplace"...but is it just me or do they seem to be doing an aweful lot with his lovelife?...not that it doesn't make for good TV, but it's just never really been done before...

There have been some "hints" in the past, but nothing overt. Heck. He was married (presumably) and had kids and a granddaughter. He, at one time, had a love life. :p

I think it is interesting, the revelations he makes, but as long as they don't drag it into every story, I'm fine with it. LOL.

The language and general content, especially the second episode (we had two episodes back-to-back), makes it unsuitable for kids. It shocked me at times! But I did enjoy it in spite of that so as long as it doesn't get any worse I'll carry on watching.

Um um, he had these things (wife, kids, grandkids) in the original 30 run of the series??? Which episodes mentioned this. I don't remember anything like that. Of course, I could easily miss something, it's been ages since I've seen the original stuff. But I thought they didn't do anything with his love life to begin with and that pretty much only started with Eccleston.

To be honest, I find it neither here nor there. I lived with a doctor who wanted no romance with his companions, and that was fine with me. Introducing it now seems like it's...I don't know...interesting but unnecessary. Don't get me wrong. It's fun to see this but it was never necessary in order for me to enjoy Doctor Who.

I did love the Vulcan mind-meld thing he had going on there. That was a new one too, wasn't it?

I am wondering what all y'all are talking about when it comes to Torchwood episodes. Are these separate from the series running on SciFi now? Will we see them on SciFi in the future?

As for my kids seeing this stuff, they have been watching things like Alien and Predator since they were little. I kept reinforcing that it was fake and made to scare people. They never had nightmares from it. Never bothered them. Now Nightmare on Elm Street bothered my younger daughter (she saw it around age 10 at a birthday party/sleep over at a friend's house). She doesn't much like gore-flicks but then again neither do I and I rarely watch them. Movies like Silent Hill, which I saw last month, really creeped me out in parts and she felt the same way. We tend to stay away from these things and if I'd known what the content was in that movie, I wouldn't have bothered to rent it. So I'm not sure if Torchwood episodes of any sort would bother the kids, gore and language included.

Torchwood is a Dr Who spin-off featuring Captain Jack Harkness and Torchwood as an organisation, something that is developed throughout the Dr Who series (Sorry, I'm not sure where you're up to viewing-wise and I may well be telling you something you already know!).

It wasn't so much the violence that worried me, though it was quite violent at times. It was more the sexual content, both in the story-line and language. The second episode, in particular, was built around a sexual theme with pretty graphic scenes. It is screened after the watershed, quite rightly IMO, and I won't be letting my son watch it. However hard he tries and ,boy, is he trying hard!!

OH Okay, thanks to both of you. I haven't seen the Hartnell ones since around 1988 and didn't remember those details. Had no idea Sarah was his granddaughter. I can't even remember what happened to her. Come to think of it, except for some episdoes of the various doctors, I haven't seen most of them since before 1990 (not including the newer stuff since then).

And thanks for the Torchwood info. I don't know if I'll ever see it. Depends on what they do here with it. I'll have to view it first and see if I'd let the kids watch. Since they are 17 and 14 they might be of age to watch. There are so many movies with R/Sexual content these days it's hard to avoid keeping them from seeing it. Since most of these scenes have a 'lead in' (usually some making out), they just pick up a book and read til I tell them it's okay to watch again (no lie).

Susan does call The Doctor "Grandfather" but its never really established whether she is adopted or his actual grandaughter. There were some suggestions that she was adopted.

In terms of love and the Doctor prior to the 8th Doctor the character didn't really have relationships as such with his companions though he did have feelings for them as companions.

He did kiss a brief companion in the film before revealing he was half human. SOme fans were not impressed with this as they saw it as not in keeping with the character but bearing in mind he changes and becomes someone else each time what did they expect?
