When I went to England, I was going to London to see the MOMI "Behind the Sofa" exhibit, and a few other places where relics were located (like Longleat), and a few places where shows were filmed, but when I got to London, I found that the majority of the MOMI exhibit had gone on "tour", and I only saw a fraction of the stuff that had been in it. So I went on to Longleat, only to find that most of her stuff was in the MOMI exhibit that was on tour. She is the one who told me where the MOMI exhibit was, so after an extended visit with her, I set off for Bath to see the exhibit. I did still go to a few of the places to see where they filmed some of the episodes, too, but getting to see the MOMI exhibit was fantastic.

While I was visiting the woman at Longleat who owned the shop, she told me an interesting story. I had noticed a few cool posters that they had used to advertise the MOMI exhibit, and asked if she wanted to sell any of them. She said no, she was not interested in selling any of them, but said she did have something I might be interested in. She went into the back closet amongst all the stuff thrown on the floor and came out with a poster of a plunger that said "Find Out How It Conquered The Galaxy". It was a poster size picture of a sign that had hung across the bridge that led to the heart of London advertizing the exhibit, but on the first day up, it had caused such a traffic jam that they were told to take it down. So they took down the large sign, and all the small companiion posters. She gave me the poster.

I brought it home and matted and framed it and it is hanging up in my Dr. Who hallway display (much to my husband's chagrin. ;) )

I did. In fact, the hotel I was staying at was only a block from it, so I spent quite a bit of time there. The MOMI still had quite a bit of Who stuff. There was a Dalek there you could get in and talk into and what you said came out in Dalek-ese.

There was also a Skeksies there from The Dark Crystal. That was cool, too!

Great Story. I'd love to see a place like that but the poster story was really funny. I did have a similar run-in with an X-files bill board. Had Mulder and Scully up there and some cute saying designed to get folks to see the series. But the owner of the billboard sign itself (not the poster) had gotten a ton of grief from the towns people. See, he worked on the county board of "whatever" and had slipped it through, renting out the spaces or something like that. Originally there were to be no billboards in our county. So he got blasted by everyone including the media. So there we were taking photos of the poster of Mulder/Scully, standing on land not even owned by this guy (that I knew of anyway) and he comes walking over. Since he lives miles away I'm not sure what was going on or how he noticed us. Anyway, he asks my husband to hand over the camera. Which he does, surprised and not sure what was going on, and you know what the jerk does, he opens the camera and rips out the 35mm film ruining each previous picture on there. We were furious. However, it turns out that since he owns the billboard tower, photographing it would be like photographing private property. Even the newspaper later told us that they stretch the line when taking such photos and only the strength of their lawyers versus the common man's lawyers allows them to publish some of these things.

So, we got no satisfaction that way. Wrote to the company who leased the billboard and explained to them what happened. They had a minor hissy fit with the tower owner once they realized we only wanted the X-files photo and we weren't even discussing the tower issue. So they sent us a bunch of photos of it, an apology letter, and said they'd have a little talk with the owner. Sheesh....

No, but it introduces the Doctor better than starting in the middle does.

Starting in the middle of Dr. Who is like starting in the middle of a soap opera. At least, you can go back to the beginning of Dr. Who. You can't go back to the beginning of a soap opera. LOL.

People start in the middle of soaps all the time. My sisters weren't even born when 'Eastenders' started.
I'd look at all the fans who've just started on the most recent two series. They seem to be surviving even though there's been almost no reference to anything that happened in the older episodes. Starting at the beginning of the entire run wouldn't really help, it took the entire history of the program to even start to explain who the Doctor was. We'll probably never know the answers to the old questions now, we've got lots of new ones. Besides, it doesn't do to live in the past.

I love that line from the Christmas Invasion when the Doctor is fighting the Sycorax chappie who severs the Doctor's arm. As the arm grows back (because the Doctor is still regenerating) the Sycorax says "witchraft!" and the Doctor responds, "Timelord!"

(and it's a "fighting hand"!)

Well, I wasn't meaning to start a debate .......... LOL. I've started watching soaps in the middle, too, but you have to play 20 (at least) questions to understand what is going on.

And if you are suggesting not going back and watching the old Doctors, you are really going to miss some of the best Dr. Who has to offer.

Nah, I didn't mean that, but there are people who have no interest in the old stuff, which is fair enough, since some of it is pretty bad compared to how good it got. We just have to pursuade them it's worth their time.

But back to the origonal question, if someone wants to know what a Timelord is, try showing them 'The Three Doctors'. That's the best one I can think of for exposition.

Actually, I don't think it has gotten all that much better. They have gotten away from the dreadful "uniforms" that seemed to have taken over during the last few older Doctors (which is good), but it is still cheesy (which is good, too). And there is some content in the new shows that I don't care for, at all.

That's a good suggestion. My favorite is "The Five Doctors". My favorite Dr. Who quote is in that show, made by the Master.

"The cosmos without the Doctor ..................... Scarcely bears thinking about." (or something like that (I haven't seen it in a while.))
