later and here's Rocky now at 85 lbs!!!

We had a loooooonnnnnnggggg year of training, with the crate and biting/nipping, even leash training (he was fine with just a collar/leash walk, up until 60 lbs but then we had to get a harness for more control).

The MAIN thing is to be consistent!! And we used only positive reinforcement and ignored the bad behavior......he is a great, calm, loving dog now. Who LOVES other dogs and people!!!

If I can train a dog (non-dog person) anyone can do it, as long as they are calm and patient and takes the time to do it!!

Thanks for all the advice!!

Rocky is a love!!

Hope, ignore too much about dominance. It is overused and over emphasized. Especially about the bull about sleeping on beds, furniture, and walking ahead of you out the door. Dogs are not wolves, nor are we dogs. I'd stray far far away from advice that includes too much about dominance, alpha rolling, etc.

(However, not allowing them on furniture and beds can be a lot more convenient for the sake of cleaning!)

It is best to wait until they are older and more towards their adult features to make the 'final guess'.

I find some of the things said about dominance so funny. In my pair it is clear (at least to me) which is dominant. He is in charge between the two of them. Does that mean he gets the food? Nope. The Toys? Nope. To go through the door first? Nope. To go up the hill first? Yup! Oh yea, it also means I never have to discipline the Beta for being slow to come when I call. The Alpha takes care of that. (In fact I sometimes have to tell him to leave Joey anone, it was OK). They both consider me in charge.

I will admit I have problems figuring out where the cat fits, other than he is their cat and God have mercy on any other dog, cat or other beast that picks on their cat. One really strange thing there. Garage door, back door or even the bathroom door on the other side cat can come and go. But if the cat comes in the front door he has to be carefully sniffed before he can get past the entry hall.

Ohhh, don't get me started on our cat! :D

Our poor cat! Rocky is such a baby about me giving ANY attention to the cat. Our cat has to wait until he is fully asleep downstairs, before the cat will even try to come down and get some attention from me.....and even then if Rocky opens one eye and sees the cat, he'll get up and try to establish some sort of control.

And when Rocky is fully away and Harley (cat) makes the mistake of coming downstairs....Rocky will pummel him and think he is a toy (not hurt him, just play....but I have to get Rocky off of him)
