October 23, 2014, Vatican Radio reports: World religions called upon to unite in a Global Covenant of World Religions to strategize and bring about peace where there are ongoing and intensifying acts of terror initiated by ISIS. Deputy assistant Secretary of State in the U.S. governments Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations, Jerry White was recently in Rome promoting a call to action for world religions to unite in a covenant to combat religiously-motivated violence.
In an interview with Philippa Hitchin, White explains the vision of the covenant: What is the vision that we see? What is the new, brave world of political health, as well as security infrastructure in the Middle East that would matter? And then, reach out is the next part of recovery. That means no one does it alone. And I think President Obama has been so clearreaching out multilaterally but also with partners, religious communities, civil society, its more than just a government or military game, obviouslyso I think thats really important
part of the effort here, as you are hearing, is a three tiered process: interreligiousdont ask them to be different but ask them to up their game in interfaith work; inter-government: get the U.N to do better and also for us to stand by and protect civilians in danger, and then also civil society, share and disseminate your practice and lets have an ingathering of that as well

He is in essence calling for unity between religions, nations, and governments to take on the ongoing crises in the Middle East and recover the political health of the Middle East and the rest of the world. Standing at the head of such a unionthe three-fold union is Rome.
Jerry White: Why Rome is so important is its become an address by which people are projecting perhaps on to Pope Francis, the Catholic Church, but again the archetype of Saint Francis, who stood for peace, and was courageous enough to go, in the 13th century during the crusades, to reach out to a sultan - that archetype is actually interestingly been invoked.
