I started doing calligraphy in a jr high art class. I have always liked doing it.

If you are looking to get started, you should check out a community education class through your local school district. They are relatively inexpensive and they will help you learn the write habits to start.

That's a really good idea. I will look in to that. Thank you for being an inspiration. I always enjoyed the idea of calligraphy. I can imagine the scribes writing out the words of the Bible. I also like illuminated art. At the Getty Center in Los Angeles, they have a rather nice display of old bibles with illuminated art and wonderful calligraphic lettering. There is also a display showing all the tools and methods of the scribes. I'm surprised there aren't more Christians doing calligraphy these days since it has such a rich history in the Bible. I suppose some are doing it though, since I have seen so many verses written out in calligraphy and framed.

I wish I could do calligraphy. It's so beautiful. How did you get started in it? What would you recommend for a beginner?
I started using a set of chisel pointed magic markers that I found in the stationary aisle at a supermarket. They are available in many places. I can't remember the brand name. I just saw them still for sale just a few days ago. You can get just one black one or a package that has several colors together. They are reasonably priced. Using them allowed me to concentrate on forming the strokes and without worring about inking the pen. I also have used a fountain pen that had several chisel tips so you could change from bold to finer tips.

Thank you for the tip. I am going to try calligraphy soon. I have so many irons in the fire, as the saying goes. (My current hobbies: knitting, learning machine knitting, crochet, just starting to learn sewing, cross-stitch...and I want to learn embroidery, and now calligraphy! )

 Enjoy it all! Creativity begets creativity! Having a variety of interests keeps me from becoming bored and stagnant in any one area. It helps me to lay one thing down for a time to learn something new and when I come back to the older hobbies I find my interest and abilities refreshed. It amazes and blesses me when I give away some of the things that I create to see how happy and blessed it make the recipient.
