I was reading earlier that Herman Cain is calling for a more conservative 3rd party to break off from the increasingly moderate Republican party.

Do you think this is actually going to take off?

Do you think that sort of division will just make things more difficult for the Republican party?

Any other thoughts on this?

Increasingly moderate? Really? He is calling for a third party more conservative than the increasingly conservative GOP.

Hmmm IF it's formed NOW and organized and working by the 2 year elections... yes. Is he counting on the TEA party to be it's foundation, do you know? Is there any real chance of it being recognized at this point?

I would change my affiliation tomorrow to it, if it would fly.

"increasingly moderate Republican party"? What?

Anyway it would be good to have some major divisions form within the Republican party.

If Cain gets it off the ground, it would be the best thing that could happen to the Democratic Party.

I could see it happening, perhaps. Somebody somewhere inside the Republican party has got to realize that they have painted themselves in to a corner with their increasingly radical and uncompromising rhetoric. They are relying on shrinking demographics and will HAVE to change or else just lose harder in four years. When that change happens I wouldn't be surprised to see a small splinter party break off. And I agree, it would be a major boon for the Democrats.

It could be on to something. Voter turn out was historic high in 2008 and still only about 58% of the voting age population. Since our 2 party system is split right down the middle within likely voters with little chance for any shift in the near future something new might just be the ticket to get the other half of the country voting. A moderate Republican party would skim off many from the Democrat side. Who knows?

Oddly, Cain would siphon off the white vote from the GOP.

Increasingly moderate Republican party? Seriously!!??

Obamacare is nearly identical to the proposals made by Republicans in the 1990's. Now the Republicans call it socialism. Increasingly moderate??

Do you think that sort of division will just make things more difficult for the Republican party?

When you split the ever decreasing white middle age demographic I can't see how it helps. Ross Perot took a lot of votes away from GHW Bush leading to a Clinton victory.

Hey, I'd be all for it! Herman Cain was the only shot the republicans had at ever getting me to vote for them.

IDK about Republicans calling it socialism... but Conservatives sure know what socialistic methods and programs look like ;)

Why is socialism a bad idea? Republicans still haven't explained that. Do Republicans want to do away with Medicare, Social Security, public schools, public roads, and all of the other social programs that their supporters use every day?

If you assume socialism means Gulag death camps then it's a bad idea. In order to do that you would need to completely ignore all those nations who have benefited from socialism and socialistic policies, including the US, but that's a price conservatives are will to pay in order to defend their own flawed ideologies.

It would probably be the best thing to happen to the Republican Party right now.

As it is, Republicans have become increasingly extremist and marginalized while Democrats have shifted to the position of the old Republicans. Obama would be a moderate Republican 30 years ago.

Or the Republicans can double down and go even more extreme and lose again in 2014 and 2016 before they learn their lesson. Also, it would help if the Republican leadership actually took back their leadership, instead of having the party be run by Fox News/talk-show radio. Cart before the horse really.
