  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

nope, faster than that, cus i with my cable modem can DownLoad 4mb mp3s in about 30 seconds cus i get 1.3mb a sec with my modem, and around 50kb a second when i download stuff offline. Plus i use this program called KaZaA Lite, which allows you to Download parts of what you want from multiple users at once so it nearly triples your normal rate. So with T-3, using kazaa lite..once you click download, i'd be done before you could move your mouse.

You hear it Amie.

It's a minor investment that's ultimately finacially worthwhile (cheaper!!) considering the time you spend online. Faster, more stable, and a steady amount a month regardless of whether you never go online, or keep the system online 24/7
You can also, for instance, activate the radio function in your mediaplayer, and explore the wonders of online radio. (some pretty cool stations there)

I'm gettin my cablelink hooked up the day after tomorrow.

It's sa-weeeeeeeet :)

DNAunion: Keep in mind that there are two security issues related to cable modems. First, unlike dial-up connections, cable modems are usually "always-on" connections. That means that the time you are connected to the internet is much greater, giving crackers a much larger uninterrupted block of time to try to break into your system. Second, unlike dial-up connections, cable modems give you a static IP. That means that crackers can target you (your IP address) today and know that you will be there tomorrow, and the next day, and next week, and so on - even if you will be disconnecting a dozen times in those weeks.  This allows them months to try to infiltrate your system.

Don't think that there aren't crackers out there trying to get the little people like you and me (as opposed to trying to get into banks, e-commerce sites, etc.).

So it is up to each individual to weigh the risks of always-on, static IP cable modems against the increase in "bandwidth". I would think that most would be willing to trade a bit of security for an large increase in speed, but some might be more worried about privacy/security than others.

valid points. DNAUNION... that's why multicable, the profider I'm going with, supplies it's members with new IP's every week.
Besides that there's also firewall softeware.
And when push comes to shove, nothing can keep the really determined skilled hacker at bay, regardless of the type of modem you use. :)

I've got ATT cable - it was only an extra $45/month on top of cable TV.   As far as I know DSL isn't available on my street so - cable.  But I've been very happy with the speed and the reliability.  I have it going into a wireless router with a hardware firewall.  With wireless we can have as many computers on as we want (up to 230 PCs) in my house and we can, of course, go out on the deck, up to the bedroom, anywhere we want with the notebooks.  Of course the destops are also wireless but we tend not to move them around much.

The wireless network is also a LAN so I can sit upstairs by the fireplace with the notebook at night and work off of the hard drive on my desktop downstairs.

Not zone alarm but I had a very bad experience with McAffee's firewall.

Right after I got my cable I decided it was time to update the antivirus.  McAffee automatically installed software a firewall too.  It conflicted with both the wireless network and with IE5 and Outlook Express 5.  I had to uninstall McAffe and then download the EI6 and Outlook Express 6.
