Has anyone seen/heard any version of this show including the movie? If not, do so right now. The movie version is great but, I thought, less dark than the play, especially with Liza Minelli in there, who has never been my favorite Sally. The best Emcees are, of course, Joel Grey and Alan Cumming (creepy in different ways, though: Grey is creepy like, I don't know, an evil puppet, and Cumming is creepy like...a stalker, I guess).

Cabaret was the first stage musical I ever saw. Our Community Theater did a production and several friends from high school were in the cast.

I saw a touring production at the Kennedy Center with Joel Gray and Werner Klemperer (Colonol Klink from Hogan's Heroes).

I'm seeing a touring production in Richmond in March.

I've only seen the movie version, which I loved (and still do love), so I guess I'm a bit biased. In my mind, there is no other Sally Bowles than Liza Minnelli (HUGE Liza fan here! :D), and no other Emcee than Joel Grey (though Adam Pascal is a close second on my list, at least from the photos I've seen of him as the Emcee ;)).

No it doesnt have anything to do with stripteasing. The Play--(Which is very different in plot than the movie) is about an American Writer named Cliff Bradshaw, who comes to Germany on the eve of World War II. Basically he falls in love with an English Cabaret Singer (Which is an equivalent of a seedy night club.) named Sally Bowles--The events of the story also coincide with songs that the Cabaret, "The Kit Kat Klub" preform--mainly facilitated by a creepy, swirly character only known as the "Emcee". There is a lot of things happen.

It definitely is John Kander/ Fred Ebb's best musical. It's creepy, It's beautiful, strange, It's a classic.
