  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Lewis is excellent. He was Anglican, probably the type of Anglican that most today would call "Anglo-Catholic." He was very, very Catholic in his thinking. He was good friends with J.R.R. Tolkien and G.K. Chesterton, two of the greatest Catholic writers and intellectuals of the 20th century.

I've read the Chronicles of Narnia 3 times, and they get better and better with each read.
Mere Christianity is an excellent book on the real foundations of Christianity. He tries to keep it clear of doctrinal disagreements (although many Calvinists hate his book) and the only thing I wish I'd see more of is the sacramental life. He doesn't really touch on church structure in it, but more of the relationship between God and man.
The Screwtape Letters are excellent and they really revitalized my prayer life.
The Great Divorce is just an amazing work, its a fictional story but there are many many truths in it, especially, IMO, the nature and intent of purgatory.

I do not think he would have converted to Catholicism... he said he did not convert because he was English, and the Church of England was where he belonged. Not believing in the legitimacy and authority of the papacy, this makes sense. But the truth is the papacy is legitimate and authoritative.

I would recommend just about anything Lewis wrote.

Bear in mind, at the time of his writings was near the unification of Italy and the issue of the Papal Lands, something which many anglicans at that time saw as a conflict of temporal lordship and spiritual leadership.

an intersting note on lewis. In Church he would sit behind a pillar or post of the sanctuary so he wouldnt see the pastor. he only wanted to hear the word, not see the person giving it...very deep and insightful...think about it:D

While I don't have much to contribute to this specific discussion, I just wanted to welcome Sherm to OBOB!

He's a Pentecostal minister (don't hold that against him ;)), and an all around great guy who I've come to know over the past few years.

I'm glad to see you posting here Sherm!!!!!

It's always nice to see interdenominational fellowship. I've just discovered some wonderfull things about our brothers and sisters on the Lutheran board; it seems they are not as different from Catholics as many of us (and them) may think.

You know The head of my local Ministerium is a catholic Priest and a man I have great respect for. Remember Christian Unity month is next month. There are a lot of things I respect about the catholic church. I have nothing but love for my catholic brothers and sisters....sort of like Lewis...to bring it back on topic LOL

NDIrish can tell you who one of my favorite theologians is. But i think all this interdenominational bickering between denominations and branches of christianity is very harmful. It just re enforces the stereotypes that the secular world has of us Christians. Remember we are all the body of Christ..be you Catholic,Methodist,Lutheran,Pentecostal, etc. This infighting really gets us nowhere and in my opinion really grieves the Holy Spirit.
