  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Invariably when one attempts to welcome in a ravening wolf into the household it becomes more and more difficult to control it. Boehner clearly wasn't a big Tea Party advocate per se, but the GOP as a whole courted these loons and they ultimately took over the asylum. I suspect Boehner is getting fed up with the antics but is powerless to do anything about it.

Reaping the whirlwind. Oh well.

Who is most likely in line behind him? Will it be a Tea Partier? And I wonder if Boehner had to fall on his sword in order to work out something so the Gov't won't shut down next week.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Yes. The republicans are trying to remove any thoughts of moderation and compromise from their side in the political process. This is why I hope they choose Louie Gohmert as the next speaker. If they want to go full extreme, he is their guy....

I doubt that the Democrats or however many moderate Republicans are left will back that choice.

This might turn out to be a good lesson for the uberconservatives -- see how far their "no moderation, no compromise" attitude gets them.

Now that Boehner no longer has anything to lose, I don't see why not. It would be a nice legacy to see him go out while trying to preserve some semblance of sanity in the House.

That would be assuming of course that they know how to learn any lesson. They took a huge hit last time they shut Washington down and now they want to do it again.

Boehner's idea of compromise is rolling over for whatever the President and democrats demand. People elected Republicans to lead both houses on Congress, they want them to serve as a balance to Obama, not be his enabler!

I hope we can get a conservative speaker who is willing to fight and challenge this administration.

This administration is on the way out, why shut down the government over something that could be changed in a year or two?

Or are you worried the GOP will lose its majority in the next election?

All I'm saying is stand up for the principles you were elected on. If you claim to be pro-life and vote to fund the planned parenthood butchers there is a serious disconnect there. If the President vetos the bill over that than it's on him. They are so petrified of being 'blamed' for a government shutdown they are unwilling to do anything to counter Obama.

Doubtful that's the reason. Dems shouldn't be gloating too much. The next Speaker could hardly be as weak and ineffective.

But the next speaker just might be a democrat.

Consider: The Tea Partiers will want someone uberconservative, the moderate Republicans will want someone... moderate, and the Dems will want a Democrat.

Which of those three voting blocks has the most votes?

Except in the end, they're not going to counter him. Obama will veto the bill and there won't be enough votes to override it. The resulting shutdown will therefore be on them because they refuse to budge.

Being a responsible adult means realizing that you don't always get what you want.

As far as I can tell from the GOP leadership the only principle they stand for is "ANTI-OBAMA NO MATTER WHAT". When their leadership came out days after he was sworn in and explicitly made it their goal to defy him at every single turn it became kind of clear.

If you claim to be pro-life and vote to fund the planned parenthood butchers there is a serious disconnect there.

Actually not really. COnsidering that federal funds can't usually be used for abortion (Medicaid can only be used in cases of rape, incest and life of the mother, all others can't be used at all), the goal to de-fund Planned Parenthood only serves to hurt women who are not getting abortions of choice. So in a sense defunding Planned Parenthood is anti-life. But it looks good to the uninformed base they pander to.

They are so petrified of being 'blamed' for a government shutdown they are unwilling to do anything to counter Obama.

As they should be! They already played brinksmanship with the credit of the USA and succesfully got us downgraded on the whole debt ceiling mess a few years back. And everytime they shut down the gov't the ONLY PEOPLE WHO GET HURT are just regular folks.

So if the GOP wants to continue to hurt every single group around them, they should definitely keep up the good work.

When has Obama compromised on anything in his presidency? He's the absolutists, he'll veto the bill over this but the media will line up to blame republicans. Obama will bend over backwards to please the ayatollahs and Castros but will never negotiate with the GOP.

That is because the republicans have turned further to the right than the ayatollahs and Castros :)

Probably not -- but only if the GOP can get its act together and find someone they all can stomach.

I smell compromise...

Last I heard, the Castros were pretty far to the left..... Oh, that's right... It's the Dems that are in bed with the Castros. So who moved?
