  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Merry Meet, everyone! I just thought that there might be a few out there who might find this parody entertaining. I have no knowledge of the author, any insight on that is appreciated. I still cannot stop laughing. For those who do not know, this is a parody of a popular christian poem, "Footprints in the sand," it might be best to read up on that before reading...well I'm sure you would still enjoy it none the less. (I can already hear the controversy I'll hear for this one :p) ^_^ Hope you enjoy it...

BUTT PRINTS IN THE SAND

One night I had a wondrous dream,
One set of footprints there was seen,
The footprints of the Goddess they were,
But mine were not along the shore.

But then some stranger prints appeared,
and I asked Her, "What have we here?
These prints are large and round and neat,
But much too big to be from feet."

"My child," She said in somber tones,
"For miles I carried you alone.
I challenged you to walk in faith,
But you refused and made me wait."

"You would not learn, you would not grow,
The walk of faith, you would not know,
So I got tired, I got fed up,
And there I dropped you on your butt.

"Because in life, there comes a time
When one must fight and one must climb,
When one must rise and take a stand,
Or leave their butt prints in the sand."

I actually think its a pretty good poem...

It's true, we have to put in effort ourselves, we have to have faith in our own strength, and fight it out, if we want to achieve anything. Swami Vivekananda also said, "You cannot believe in God until you believe in yourself."

I've read the original poem as well, and I actually think this one makes more sense ;)

Perhaps the contrast between the poems points to the paradox of "works" and "faith".........or works and grace. In Christian thought, all is done in us but without us, yet before reaching this point grace works in us but "not without us".

In Pure Land Buddhism, it is seen as a necessary step on the path when, on reflection, we recognise that "self-power" was in fact the working of "other-power"...................there is in fact neither "self" nor "other" power.........just the "graceful acceptance" only.

For me, "grace" is at the heart of all..........Although most Buddhist paths revolve around the words:- "Buddhas can only point the way, each has to walk the path themselves"..........it is also said that at the moment of enlightenment "effort falls away, having reached the end of its scope."

Perhaps this is the culmination of all paths............effort reaching the end of its scope?

Ah, whatever.

Really, I thought either one was appliable to our religion. I mean, God isn't male or female, thus Goddess is applicable, too. And the statement goes along as well (God helps those that help themselves).

Hey, what an interesting position. I never really considered that point of view ;) .

Hmm, anyway I just like the idea that you'll be left behind if try. It takes some effort to follow your beliefs, and some support; so I suppose there must be a balance between the two.

Hey, at least it rhymed :p, had humor, and a good meaning. But I'm glad to hear that it applied to people of all faiths.

It did. What I meant by the "ah, whatever" comment was that I wasn't offended by it.
