Upon further study for groups. Militant Christians are not quite exactly in the same vein as radical muslims. Their fight is far more for secular reasons with vague out of context scripture for support and just stamp the word christian on their groups name to legitimize themselves more. Perhaps they are not on the same level as in being successful in maintaining their existence.

I notice you find no "Christian groups" video taping a crime - reading the Bible claiming God is guiding them and sending out the video so Christians all over the world will come over and join them.

When a Christian individual or group does something wrong - and takes the time to video tape their crime so all the world can be repulsed by it - what you do NOT see - is Christians from every civilized country on the planet rushing to join them. Rather you find Christians from all over the world repulsed and expressing disgust.

Contrast that with Islam. For Islam it is how you grow from 800 to 30,000 in SIX weeks.

The difference between ISIS and a hypothetical radical Christian group is that ISIS can actually back up what they do with the Quran and the trusted sources which tell about the life of Muhammad. When Muslims quote peaceful verses in the Quran they need an audience that is completely ignorant of Islam who simply take them at their word. People do not understand the Islamic doctrine of abrogation which cancels out most of the peaceful verses. The peaceful verses are from the time period when Muhammad was preaching in Mecca and was completely outnumbered by the Pagans. He could not possibly fight against them so he called for peace and tolerance. Once he moved to Medina and became powerful the tone of the Quran changes and no longer teaches peace and tolerance with unbelievers.

Not every follower of a religion is going to act on everything that the religion teaches which is why not all Muslims are like them. The difference between Christianity and Islam is that if you follow everything Christianity teaches you would be a Saint who people look to emulate while in Islam you are a warrior just like Muhammad and the rest of the early leaders in Islam.

I would reinforce that this thread is about how christians should deal with christian fanatics. It is obvious that people continue to avoid the question by pointing at someone else like it doesn't happen with us or never will.

This thread is not about islam. I regret using them as an example for my starting argument. This thread is about how we as christians should deal with something like a christian ISIS if, or when, our own version of them creeps up eventually.

In this case (ISIS), I think Obama might have had a good point--with emphasis upon "might."

The Jihadists want it to be a war between Christianity and Islam. They're very aware of the force of propaganda. Therefore, any position taken that doesn't recognize them as genuine representatives of Islam is on target, propaganda-wise, whether or not they are. And why anyone on our side would call them the "Islamic State" baffles me.

It also suggests that they are an actual state, which by no stardard are they. When they change the name to "God's Holy Empire," or something else like that, I suppose all the US media will fall in line with that, too.

They can be a rather difficult religion to understand. They appear to be just as fractured as much of Christianity is today.

Understanding Islam

I was reading in the current events forum and a post triggered some questions about Islam. I did not want to hijack the thread, so I'm posting them here.

I know absolutely nothing about Islam or Muslims. I don't even know where they all live (or are they everywhere?). But from the sounds of your post, it seems like Islam is a religion that has different "denominations" or different [maybe political] ideologies kind of like the difference between ultra-conservative Christians versus ultra-liberal Christians. Is that right?

If that's the case, isn't the war a holy war that is intra-Islam that only involves Christians from the point of being in the wrong place (where the radicals live) at the wrong time?

I recall Obama's saying in the latest news thing about IS/ISIS/ISIL that they were not really muslims. Everytime something on the news has anything on Obama.. I just have to read the comment sections on the article,if any.

I saw comments along the lines of, "Well it doesn't matter what you say they are. They think they're muslim."


What about our extreme branches of Christianity in the vein of ISIS? Are they Christian? They're doing very unchristian things, just like ISIS is doing very un-islamic things.

Please, I request we do not turn this thread into a "well muslims are doing things aligned with their religion!" I wish to discuss the skeletons in our closet. I am just using Islam as an example for comparison as they are making the headlines right now.

In Christianity, the Nicene Creed defines who is and who is not a Christian.

Unfortunately, both don't mention having to be morally upright, which means we'll find bad apples in both religions.

Um, that's based on a misunderstanding of what excommunication is.

Excommunication is the exclusion of an individual from the sacraments of the church or denomination due to grievous and unrepentant sin. It is NOT an expulsion from the church or denomination, although perhaps certain fringe groups do that. Indeed, the excommunicated are encouraged to continue to attend services and to seek reconciliation so that they may be welcomed to return to the sacramental life of the church.

Not all excommunication is apostasy, although apostasy is certainly an automatic excommunication.

Could you post examples of things extreme Christians have done? The main ones that usually get mentioned are the crusades and the inquisition- both instances where there was politics involved too. Politics kills a lot of good people and turns a lot of good people into bad people.

However, neither of these groups existed primarily in order to advance their idea of God's plan for mankind--and that's why the comparison to Islamic terrorist groups is not apt.
