I think he means parallel universe or one of those bubble universe things. Not dimensions like the multiple string theory dimensions....

Nah we probably won't meet aliens, though a book you might want to read [Entering Space--Creating A Spacefaring Civilization] by Robert Zubrin. An excelent book, and very sane about the issues.

Oh and if aliens did come they'd be more powerful than us. And so, alot of people would be feeling inferior and lost. The entire psyche of humanity would be changed, we would no longer be alone, but we would be lost. Because then we'd have to face the confines of the biota and know how very small we are.

It might be the end of christianity (doubt it) or the end of Islam (even more doubt it) but with these on the way out either we'll convert to the superior alien's religion (if they have one) or there will be a large number of newly founded cults.

People need faith in something...
For some it's God.
For some it's knowledge.
For some it's truth.
But they need something... and an alien would shake the foundations of most people's God, most people's knowledge, and what alot of people consider truth.

It'd be messy. We're not ready.

Interesting.......although saying that Christians don't believe in aliens isn't true either. No where in the Bible does it say that God didn't create other life forms. But we have province over all the creatures of the earth because we were made in His image. I mean, God DID create the universe...Of course I'm not saying that I personally belive in aliens, but yeah....don't assume anything. You know what they say about assuming. ;)

Randman, you're wrong about first contact not changing religion. It would not necessarily happen quickly, but the change would come.

That said, first contact is a bit of a scary concept. If you look at the history of the Age of Exploration and into the current era, EVERY aboriginal culture contacted by technologically advanced outsiders had been severely and irrevocably disrupted and changed if not destroyed outright. This occured even when the contacters had the purest of intentions.

No matter what happens (whether we initiate the contact or not; whether the aliens have pure intentions or not) all civilizations on Earth will uindergo dramatic changes.

Editted to add: Even the Kung! of Africa have been changed.

- I have to agree... any alien race advanced enough to reach us within the next few generations would be FAR FAR more advanced.  We would probably be absorbed into their "society", if they had such a thing, or defeated easily in a battle for our resources, if they valued them at all and were anything like present-day humans.

- Our only hope would be that along with scientific and technological advances came "humanistic" (alienistic?) advances as well, meaning that they put aside the kind of petty squabbling we humans tend to do over gods and goddesses and such.
