Budgie Taming

Hiya everyone, I am new to this site so would like to say hello.

Can anyone please give me some advice regarding training a budgie.........My nephew bought a budgie 2 weeks ago and the budgie is between 9-10 weeks old now, my nephew decided he didnt want it so i offered gladly to give him a home as my mum used to have them as pets when i was growing up. he was bought from a pet store and hes really sweet only he wont perch on my finger whenever I get my finger near to him he either bites or nibbles, not sure which it is to me it seems like he is biting. Anyway he will not at all sit on my finger and I am spending lots of time with him, talking to him and trying different methods, such as a perch which he sits on and it gets him out of his cage and loves to fly around the room..but he will not entertain my finger at all. I dont feel like he is scared of me as he comes to the front of the cage chirping away at me and he seems to understand when i am in the room. i must spend 4-5 hours with him a day trying to build a relationship with him but so far the bond isnt really there properly yet. I want him to sit on my finger whilst i take hi out of his cage but i have a feeling i will have to use teh perch for a really long time if not permanent. I do want to get another one too but feel it wont be the right time till Eddie is used to me etc..any ideas.

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about budgie taming Have you tried calling pet stores, or searching the internet to find info on this
We only had finches (because of their beautiful songs) Hope you find the info your looking for !

I have 2 budgies and one took to my finger pretty quickly and the other one still won't. I am still trying after almost 4 years. I don't try very hard with the other one, though, I must admit. I sort of gave up but am trying again. The way I taught the other one was to hold a branch of millet in my hand (with a towel over my chest) and call him to me. I did that every day for a long time and he sat on my finger after that. You can buy millet spray at any pet store.

Just putting a little food in your palm and holding it very still inside the cage so that he can get used to you is the best thing to do. Try that first.

Hi angel 1997 I will try to help you since I own 2 budgies and a lovebird. some budgies are afraid of hands when the budgie is out of the cage move your hand slowly to him and say up. try this for several days too see if that helps. also maybe someone before your nephew got him scared the bird.

I had a budgie when I was much younger. He was pretty wild from the get-go. The first thing you need to do is have his wings clipped. Some people think this is cruel, but so is a nervous bird flying into walls, or worse, the bird flying out of the house. Second, you have to finger train the bird. I'd suggest buying a small, free standing perch (a perch that is outside of the bird's cage), then work towards the bird perching on your finger. Always put the perch or your finger right above the birds beak, as birds "climbing" up is natural. The more time you spend with the bird, the tamer it will be.

I was just browsing and came across this thread. I wasn't coming to the Forum in July so didn't see this then,but I noticed that was the only time the OP ever came here!
This is a very good question for new budgie owners,so thought I would share what has worked for me. When I was 8yrs. old my grandparents got me a budgie for my BD,and my dad told me that a friend told him the way to tame one is to set the cage on an end-table next to the couch and do not even attempt to let the bird out or mess with it for 4 days. Just do what you have to,feed,water,and give lots of attention by talking to it,sitting next to it. By 4th day,budgie should be acting like it wants to come to you when you talk to it.You can then let it out. Mine hopped right on my finger,and I do not wing clip! I also taught her to come to my whistle and she would without fail. She lived 9 years.This method still works,for me and now my grown daughter,who got a parakeet.Just make sure you give the baby a lot of attention and sit next to it's cage. Even if you are just reading,you can talk to it often while you are sitting there.
