  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know this thread started with the bashing of US comedy but I thought in the spirit of fairness I'd name my favourite comedies from across the pond:

3rd Rock from the Sun - A great premise for a sitcom and some really OTT performances from John Lithgow
Fraiser - great characters and very sharp writing

umm....that's all :p

Funny you should mention that. I caught a bit of 3rd Rock yesterday (some cable channel, don't ask which) and thought about mentioning it here, then I remembered that this was a Brit comedy thread....but since the rot has set in now I'll second Frasier too. :p

Scrubs is another American one I've taken a shine to. :D

That might be ITV2, they're showing it at the moment. They have a double-bill from 11.30- 12.30am which is stopping me from getting to bed on time!

Hey guys and girls, i hope you dont mind an Aussie posting in here but when i saw the thread on Brit comedy i couldnt help myself. I love English comedy but i guess with an English husband and English parents it was bound to happen. Apart from which who could not laugh at the Brits????? My favs, oh where to start? Lenny Henry, a bit rude but oh so funny. Father Ted for obvious reasons, Only fools and horses, The Vicar of Dibley, Mr Bean, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme another crude one but funny, Ab Fab. The list could go on and on and on. God Bless. Sue.

That's a shame. There's been a lot of good stuff throughout the years.
the Honeymooners hs always been my favorite show, with the Young Ones in close second.
Flying Circus? Goes without saying.
Ditto, Fawlty Towers
Red Dwarf
I FINALLY got around to seeing The Office last night. Squarely on the list, now.

Sorry Hollywood sends so much garbage. We get "Are You Being Served" in return...

Don't get me wrong either, I think a lot of the American sitcoms we get over here absolutely stink. There's so many that just follow the same formula and are predictable in the extreme. I personally find Friends one of the most vacuous and empty-headed things on TV. I remember one episode inparticular which I had the misfortune of just catching the end of where Pheobe (details may be a bit hazy) thought some stray cat was her mother re-incarnated and Ross was trying to tell her it wasn't as he had seen "Lost Cat" posters with the picture of the same cat in it. And at one point where Ross was arguing with her Pheobe said something like "It doesn't matter if I'm right or wrong, can't you just be a friend?". And that for me just summed up the Friends philosophy, if you're being a true friend you'll let people delude themself. Be nice, don't be judgemental.

There are so many funny ones, but i probably won't write them all, in no order at all i love:

Little Britain
Deadringers
Some Mothers do 'ave em
Fawlty Towers
Only Fools and Horses
Alan Partridge
Black Adder...

heh, and that's not even all of them, its a shame i don't really get to watch them much these days.

Yeah, David Rasche played Detective(?) Sledgehammer who slept with his gun, cant remember much about it except it was on pretty late at night in the mid 80's and was of the Airplane/Police Squad type of comedy
