Ooh, I've done a little bit of the refurbished thing. I'll never do that again. I suspect it wasn't so much refurbished as it was that they were hoping I was too lazy or shy to take it back.

What happened?

Uh, I imagine it's just a normal Alienware Steam Machine. You know, i7-4785T, Geforce 860M+ that reaches 750 Ti performance levels, 8GB RAM, 1TB 5400RPM hard drive.

Right off hand that doesn't seem to bad, but I could easily miss something. Probably better than my AMD 4.1ghz, likely low grade CPU. I game but just single player and I'm not going to invest a whole lot into it. I'm still using a radeon 7750 for instance, that's way overdue for upgrade but, I just can't justify the big bucks to move up to what I want to replace it with.

Point being, others may be able to better direct you from here on.

In my experience, the term "refurbished" means little to nothing. It just makes the used PC sound better than what it is. Doesn't mean it's a bad one, but doesn't necessarily mean it's any better than just plain ol' used.

The steam machine isn't really that great. Not for more modern games. Like I mean you won't be running high end video games. I didn't care for the controller that much either. I also looked at the steam device that lets your stream your PC games to your tv. But its kind of pointless since you can't let anyone use the computer while your streaming from it.

OK, good job...you've done some pertinent research. What conclusion did you draw? Are you thinking "good deal" overall, but just question if it'll last?

In a sense.

I think either PC will meet my needs, but that if the Steam Machine is in good condition, I will have a better time with it.

Yet it's better than the full desktop I linked to, or what I can build on a $500-$600 budget...
I see. In that case wouldn't hurt to get it then. I built a new pc end of last year and while its not top of the line in terms of specs, its still pretty high. Cost about $1300. More then I wanted to spend.

Can we take a vote on whether I should get a refurbished Steam Machine i7, or that new computer I linked to with the i7-7600 and Geforce GT 730?

I don't know how to do polls, so just post in this thread.

I've just been upgrading this same machine since 02 or so. lol. I mean it's not nearly the same machine anymore but that's how I do it. However I have considered in certain cases, a used computer would work well for me, like if I lost mine to a house fire/stolen, then just upgrade it, from there.

So, now the question I would be asking myself is, am I willing to fix it, if something goes wrong? Also, they may treat you well with your warranty, but some of those aren't worth the paper they ware written on, the companies try to renig every time. Just consider that, and again, it may not be a problem with a reputable company.

OK, that does away with upgrading it.

I might go for it then, just know it could go down, and if you are sure the warranty would work out, you'd have it for at least that long, and it's possible, if you can repair it yourself a lot longer. It's even possible nothing would go wrong for years.

Weigh the risks, and don't go by just what I say.
