  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

another question:

how do you keep baby awake to complete a feeding? Mary nurses for maybe 10-15 minutes on one breast then falls asleep. She then wakes about 10 minutes later nurses the othe breast 10-15 minutes then falls asleep. She then repeats this cycle, so a feeding will easily last 1.5 hours.

Lanolin cream. It hurts but it WILL get better! Six weeks is definitely the magic number and although that seems like a long ways away it'll be here before you know it :)

Thanks for the advice, but I can't use lanolin cream, I have a different kind, but when I use it she won't nurse.

it is uncomfortable at 1st but does get so much better! If you find it to be unbearable make sure she is latched on correctly, and by that she should have a big amount of boob in her mouth not just the nipple.
When my son fell asleep I would just nudge him a little, tickle his nose stuff like that.
Soon you both will have it down and it will be like nothing to you!

To keep my son awake, the nurses in the hospital told me to undress him so that he was only in a diaper. Bouncing a little while I nursed (even walking around the room) would also help keep him up.

For the pain, try putting a cold or hot washcloth on your breasts between feeding. Ice packs also help a lot. :)

I agree that 6 weeks is the magic number...right around that time my bruises disappeared and the pain stopped :)

you've got sound advice!

I wouldn't use the lanolin right before nursing.. apply it after nursing... then wipe your breast before nursing.... usually most babies aren't bothered by it.. but obviously Mary is....

for the falling asleep... after she nurses on one breast... take her off, try burping.. rub her back to sorta stimulate her awake.... then put her on the other breast.....according to the LLC, it only takes 10-15 mins. to empty a breast..... so, if you can get her to stay awake that 1/2 hour.. you should be good until she's ready to nurse again...

Good luck! It gets better! It took me a long time.. (longer than 6 weeks), but it gets easier! Go see a LLC if you need too, they're wonderful help!

hurts!!!! LOL, help me!! I want to keep doing it, but it hurts, I need support.
I'm sorry it hurts. It does hurt in the beginning. I say it took about 6 weeks before it stopped hurting. It's tough toughing it out. You are Tough! :D

If you can't use the cream use breast milk on your nipples. Let it air dry on to them. It's naturally antibacterial and it really does help. I also would apply the cream after nursing so it would have time to dry before he'd nurse again.

Yeah, unwrapping them helps to keep them awake, so does bright lights, talking a lot.

Breastfeeding shouldn't hurt. If it does, that is the Prime signal that the baby's latch isn't correct. Please contact a Lactation Consultant or a La Leche League Leader for help. :)
That's what I read in one of my books. The baby should have the entire areola in his/her mouth or it will hurt as they aren't latched on properly.

the areola, that is the dark area around the nipple right? if so the entire thing will not fit in Mary's mouth. Mine is the size of a nursing pad.

I do know that she has more than just the nipple in her mouth though, its that she has a really hard suck.

so sorry it hurts! For me, three weeks was always my magic number.. if I could get over that hump, I was fine. Also, no one kill me, but I always supplimented with formula during the first week or two. Mostly this was because I never get my milk in until like 5 days after birth, and then its a slow rise, so I'd supp just a wee bit to give my poor breasts a break, and me too. It was soooo helpful and the babies were more peaceful for it. And they are all healthy too.
prayer for you!

^_^ yeah, mine are like that too. As long as she's got SOME of it in her mouth that should be enough. It can take a few weeks for the soreness to go, hang in there! My first liked to feed every 2 hrs, night and day, for the first 9 months. After that he dropped to every 3 hrs :D

Everyone thought I was mad for keeping on, but I ended up bf him for 4 years! It was worth every minute.

I can't comment on the feeding but with the staying awake when feeding my mom got my sister to very gently pinch my nieces toes - not so that it hurt but just so that it kept them awake - it worked with all my siblings and i and my 2 nieces and 4 nephews.

BEacause you are bountifully endowed-- take great care to support your breast for baby- use a boppy or some other pillow to support baby, so you can be tummy to tummy. Think of your breast as a ballon that you have drawn a circle on (your areola)- inorder for it to fit in your mouth you have to squeeze/ compress the ballon...that's just what you have to do with baby. When does it hurt and how?? Does it hurt as you latch on, during feeding or after?? If it hurts as you are feeding there are positioning issues-- be diligent about popping baby of the breast and beginning again. If you are diligent at every feed for a couple days- it will get easier barring any major issues.

 Hang in there!!!

Also, try keeping her on the same breast within any 2 to 3 hr period. That way, even if she needs a little rest in the middle of feeding you can be sure she is getting plenty of hindmilk. Overall your nipples get more chance to recover from any soreness because they're only on call every 4 to 6 hours, plus spaces between feeds get bigger as baby is fuller. When I thought I had an over-active let-down I switched to giving just one breast per feed and it was great (didn't solve the problem though, which turned out to be thrush in his tummy -).

Hang on in there - it does get easier! Honest. And keep syaing to yourself: this too shall pass. That mantra really helped me when things got tough.
