I can't believe this I am not questioning Gods feelings on breast feeding but on showing the breasts in public when doing so. It goes without saying that God approves of breast feeding.

I don’t know, it takes a really self-centered line of thinking to assume a woman who is breastfeeding is doing so because she wants male attention, as opposed to doing something totally innocuous like, oh... Feeding a baby. When I was in public and I had a hungry baby the absolute last thing on my mind was how I could entice the men around me by taking out my breasts under the pretense of breastfeeding.

I also think that if one uses words like “the girls” and “transaction” to talk about breasts and breastfeeding, one should probably sit that discussion out.

Honestly, "breast feeding in public" doesn't bother me.

I think the general perversion "on the surface" (that triggers a reaction) that is common at least in North America is a sign of excessive soul decay.

I think it's a bit deeper than that.

I recall hearing back in Jesus day, there were these people called "bleeding head" Pharisees, they refused to look up in case they gazed upon a woman, so they'd bump into walls so much their foreheads bled.

Since we have the Holy Spirit now, I thought maybe there's something "new" you know ... since Jesus didn't die for nothing?

GOOD GRIEF—your question has been answered. When Scripture speaks of modesty for women it does so in terms of overdressing, wearing braided hair and jewels, not in terms of public breastfeeding. Nudity was much more common in Biblical times. Peter fished naked but Scripture doesn’t tell us that God had a problem with it, it was common practice at the time.

This is a discussion forum and people are discussing your topic. I've attempted to ask some questions to understand your viewpoint better, but you haven't answered them and got mad..... It's not black and white. Exposure while breastfeeding is how the breast gets out of the clothing for a child to feed. Even when covering, things can happen to shift the cover and momentarily expose the breast. Does God approve of women flashing people for no reason? probably not. But, If a woman is busy doing what God has created for her to do for a baby to eat and she is somehow exposed? I don't think He regards that as sin. Just a guess, but probably most breastfeeding women were exposed in public in somesort of way when nursing outside of the home for most of history and it was just a fact of life and not sexual or tempting. Probably up until the Victorian area, when Victorians made most everything about sex. I think the verse about modesty in the Bible is more about what you are adorning your naked body with rather than your naked body itself. I mean David danced naked in front of God and a ton of people and God was pretty upset that people condemned him.

It was a question I was hoping people would give their personal answer to how God would feel. Most did not but gave their own opinion of the subject. I think you all should start your own threads. You're so good at evading. I am done with it.

Unless you care to take all your meals in private, I'd suggest you keep that opinion to yourself. Same for those who suggest putting a cover over your head, I'd like to see you eat a meal with a blanket over your head. Babies are people too, and don't deserve to be restricted to eating with a blanket over their head or only when they are at home.

Babies, especially young babies, require feeding often. God designed a nice, portable way to get customized nutrition delivered any time, any place when mom and baby are together. It was suitable for Jesus himself (we assume, I don't think pumps were invented back then, and there is much art depicting Mary nursing Jesus).

I have not met a single breastfeeding mother who purposefully exposes themselves excessively when breastfeeding a baby. I do know there are some "lactivists" who take it too far, but they are the exception. I've breastfed 3 kids, for the past 6 years. I've breastfed a preemie with nipple shields. I'm still breastfeeding my youngest. I've never "exposed myself" beyond what is necessary to latch on.

You shouldn't make it personal or attack anyone. People are attempting to answer the op and explore it fully. This is a discussion forum. It goes deeper than just God doesn't approve of public breastfeeding where something might be exposed just because, as we can see by the discussion. Scripture doesn't specifically address the issue. So, it is up for discussion.

Seeing as Scripture does not speak on whether or not we have to or don't have to cover up, it's hard to gauge what God thinks. That's probably why pretty much everyone is just saying their opinions. We have no Scriptural support to tell us what God thinks, and it's not a good idea to put words in God's mouth, so they're just that—opinions.

My first instinct is to say that it's that big of a problem, though, since breastfeeding is hardly erotic or sexual in any way; it's just feeding a baby. But then again, that's just my opinion.

As for modesty, modesty is not simply a matter of what to keep covered up. It's a matter of humility as well. Most women, in my experience, are not trying to garner attention by breastfeeding uncovered. They're just trying to feed a hungry baby.
