You have completely stated everything I wanted to say. I'm sure we're not the only fans who felt this way, too. I highlighted your statements that really articulated my frustrations. I, too, like the first 3 books, and probably won't read this one again much.
I've been reading all the reviews on Amazon.com. It's rather amusing, if you're interesting. So many people feel this way.
I just think SM wanted to wrap everything up in a nice pink bow, but it failed miserably. I'm all for happy endings, but to get these happy endings so much had to be contrived.
One thing that has bothered me from the beginning is something she set up so perfectly in Twilight. Edward is a Vampire, something we can't get around. He's something so evil even he is not sure where he will end up in the afterlife. He does not consider himself to be one of God's creatures. Furthermore, he has a nearly undeniable thirst for blood and what I loved so much about him was his strenght in denying his very nature for the love of this girl. This was set up beatufully in Twilight and was the core of the entire story. Even in New Moon when Jasper tries to go after Bella, Carlise is the only one who can stand to be around her. Even Edward finally has to leave the room. He is still tortured by this. Then in Eclipse, suddenly it's a non issue. It's explained away in one sentence! And from then on, no one in the entire vampire clan is dangerous to humans in any way. So in 119 years Edward couldn't control his vampire self without great self-restraint, but enter Bella and he's cured.
Also in Twilight, the family was rather brooding and dark. That quickly ended.
In Breaking Dawn, there was nothing to ground Bella. I loved the fact that in the first three books Bella was firmly grounded in reality. The reader grasped the concept that she had to keep this secret and that she was a normal teenager in a real high school. Outside of the short wedding, the only human was Charlie who was always over-protective and high strung and he simply accepts what has happened. And he's in no danger at all.
And why did Jacob have to imprint on the baby? What would be so wrong with beginning a let's-see-where-this-goes relationship (without imprinting) with Leah?
And is anyone else bothered by the way EVERYONE has a super power? It's more like they're superheros than vampires. I thought the super power thing was supposed to be special, not something every vampire had. It completely takes away from the powers being special. They're not special at all. It's just a matter of figuring out what yours is.
I'll close with the most irksome thing to me. We had all that set up about the self-sacrifices Bella would have to make for Edward. She made none. She got a pretty darn perfect life, and it makes being a vampire much more glamorous than being a human. Anyone would make the same choice Bella did a thousand times over. She wasn't a monster in any way, and for that matter, neither was anyone else in the entire book.
I'm sure I'll find more to say. It's nice getting this all of my chest.
