He took a loaf of bread,
and when he had given thanks,
he broke it and gave it to them, saying .... (Luke 22:19)
What did he give thanks for? For the bread? Just as I give thanks before meal?
Jesus said he anxiously waited for the Passover meal (v. 15). He was not giving thanks for the bread. He was giving thanks to the Father for giving him the honor of serving the mankind, by giving himself up.
Jesus went up to the cross in thanksgiving. My God took it a privilege to serve me by dying on the cross for me.
And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying... (v. 20)
As I eat bread and wine, I remember his Passover meal, I remember his thanksgiving, and I remember his love for me. Thanksgiving fills my heart as I kneel in submission.
Do this in remembrance of me. (v.19)
Lord,
Every time I kneel before you for bread and wine, thanksgiving fills my heart and soul. It did not come from me. It came from above. You placed it within me, so that I can remember you, your love, your thanksgiving, and your submission to your Father.
Lord,
Every time I take bread and wine, I remember you through thanksgiving. Let all knees fall before you in thanksgiving, for you alone are our Savior. Amen.
