I don't know where to put this, so I put it here.

Which branches of Christianity are there which pay homage, respect, venerate or any other way of showing respect to icons is there - also, which branches of Christianity permit the use of the art of people, and which ones dissallow the making and possession of "idols" (for example, as Islam goes with the 'no icons or pictures at all'?

Thanks.

IO

edit: changed 'sects' to 'branches' as it was intended to be.

Orthodox Christians (not a sect BTW) venerate the prototype of that which is depicted in an Icon, and not the Icon itself which is simply wood and paint, just as the Bible is just paper and ink. You can find out more if you are interested in The Ancient Way forum on CF.

Lutherans have stained glass and statuary but they have no religious use. They are pieces of art which may serve the function of reminding us of what or who they depict, but they are not "reverenced" in any direct way.

The closest we come is when we reverence the Body and Blood of Christ in the Lord's Supper.

Some Lutherans reverence the cross, but it isn't a widespread practice.

The Eastern Orthodox Church is the church most noted for its use of iconography.

The Vatican Catholics (and its breakaway groups, like the Old Catholics) and Oriental Orthodox are also noted too.

Anglicans also support iconography and many of our churches, services, and individuals themselves make good and proper use of icons.

Some denoms believe that you can give veneration to a statue or icon, and whatever veneration is given to it is passed on to the one it represents in heaven. It goes a whole lot deeper than just a rememberance of.

If you read this it looks like they believe spirits work through statues?
