One thing that is not fun about living on the woods besides people dumping animals on you is running people off your property. I heard a hound dog in very close proximity and without even thinking about it I got in the car and tracked it down. There stands 4 guys with guns and I yell: 'Get the hell off my property!' They finally get the dog and were sort of defiant a saying they had no control over where their dog went. Ok, whatever. I told them I was sorry for getting nasty but coon hunting can really screw up deer hunting and my husband would not be happy. We do not want you hunting on pur property. Some of the guys were acting beligerent and basically showing their guns in a way that was not cool. And guess what I went out their with? My phone. Pretty stupid.

glad yer ok

Woohoo! Congratulations. Fill
us in with the details! Weight? Points? Etc. I'll tell my husband. I told him you were out. Going to process yourselves or not?

My brother and I both got bucks today, it was a nice start to the season. We still have tags to fill and the rest of the week looks promising. We were both on a 2-year dry spell so this was a nice start.

My brother a nubby (which counts as a doe) and me a fork. Nothing for the wall, but meat on the table. Neither were weighed. I used to butcher my own, but we've got a guy who does such a nice job for $40 that it just doesn't pay to. I'll have some jerky and sausage made, but I'm not huge on processing. I like a lot of steaks and roasts.

You turn them in don't you?

Well I am excited for you! Huge savings on the grocery bill for you! My husband cuts and I process. I'm planning on taking a trip to Cabelas this year for better equipment for processing the meat however. Mine is on its last leg. I'm sure you will sleep well tonight! :)

Turn them in? You mean like with the DNR? We report them, yes. I would like to try making sausage or jerky one of these years, but it seems like such a gamble - I don't want to screw anything up and I love the stuff our meat market delivers us...

When does the season end for you? We go through next Sunday. I'm taking the morning off, but then I'll be back at it.

Yeah with the DNR. We have to drive them in and return home to process. Gun season for us started last Saturday. I'll have to look in my book to find when it is break in the season tomorrow. Had one glass of wine too many tonight. :sorry: Hubby went out this evening but saw not hide nor hair of anything! No tracks, nothing. Given the wind he thought they may be lying down today. But since rut is coming in strong now, I find that sort of hard to fathom. He knows more that I do though when it comes to hunting. I'm just the flunky taking orders. :D

Oh boy I just realized exactly how different the US is from Europe...

This couldn't be happening here.
Like four guys hanging around on your property with visible guns.
Does things like that happens often?

I would've crapped my pants that's for sure:help:

Yeah it happens. But it is because people try to hunt.

I don't know a lot about coon hunting, but if they were just trying to get their dogs back off of posted property, then they should've asked for permission and if that was not possible, go into get their dogs without their guns.

I know in pheasant hunting with my English Springer Spaniels, I always had control over my dogs. They never got beyond shotgun range and when I called them in, they came, immediately. Obedience was their desire and they were the best at it.

Springer spaniels are definitely more controllable than hounds.
I had a springer. He was a great dog.

This is true. Scent hounds are notoriously difficult to control when they are on a trail. I don't invest the time in training mine to the extent possible, so I don't hunt them.

I know a guy who trained and uses hounds for bear hunting. He puts radio collars on the dogs and can track their location with his GPS monitor.

He has a large cage which he mounts on the front of his truck. He then drives down the fire roads and such with the dogs. As soon as they catch scent of a bear, they'll start howling. He lets them loose and keeps track on them, following the best he can. He said he can tell immediately when they've treed a bear by the change of their barking and he knows he has to get there before the bear injures or kills one of the dogs, which has happened before.

For me, this was a distasteful way of hunting. I never told him, but I found it to be cruel.

But I also saw the cruelty in pheasant hunting and turned away from it and all forms of hunting.

I don't have anything against people who hunt deer, rabbits or other game animals for food.

I have a problem with the state stocking for the sake of hunting, and its done at a time of year where the animal has no chance of survival, being its at the very beginning of winter.

I also oppose hunt clubs down south where animals are stocked and raised in a fenced in property, just to be shot by a customer who is placed on a stand where the animal is baited.

Agreed. That's not hunting.
