Boxer Tommy Morrison dies of AIDS, regrets permissive lifestyle

That said, his name does not deserve to be mentioned with the greats of the sport. He wasn't a good enough fighter to be remembered for his skills in the ring. He wasn't the dominating athelete that Arthur Ashe or Greg Louganis was. He won his title from a nearly-senior citizen at a particularily weak point in the sport's history (one that it hasn't fully recovered from and might never recover from, if the different Organisations and Commisions cannot get together for the good of the sport and if bloodthirsty monsters keep tuning into MMA savagry instead of legitimate sport. If not for Rocky V (which was an awful movie, especially when contrasted with the 1st which was a true work of art) nobody would know who this guy was.

I remember him from the Rocky movie. It's too bad his reckless behavior made him lose so much. Not just the sexual behavior, but his behavior in general.

I knew of Tommy Morrison. I have always been an avid boxing fan. Not a great fighter but well known in the boxing community.

I have never followed boxing - ever. But i have heard of his name.

Of course you have. He was in a movie and has been in the news on and off for a decade because of his HIV infection and subsequent lies about it. You haven't heard of anything about Tommy the fighter since he beat 106 year-old Geaorge Foreman....mostly because there was never any reason to talk about him. His career was rather brief with almost all of his fights in the 1990s - a decade dominated by the fall of Mike Tyson and the rise of Riddick Bowe, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis.

Maybe this bum felt remorse on his deathbed, but as recently as 5 or 6 years ago he was trying to get back into boxing, claiming alternately that he never had HIV in the first place and that a rival promoter rigged a blood test and that HIV was a government invention and that the Feds were trying to keep him down.

If you studied what AIDS is you would learn that once someone has AIDS whatever they die from, aside from outside catastrophe like a car accident, being shot, etc..., the cause of death is AIDS related complication.

What is irresponsible is judging people out of your own ignorance of Tommy's condition prior to this report.

Different articles say he was bedridden (sick) for years. So, it probably wasn't a car crash. Some of the articles say Tommy thought AIDs was a "government conspiracy" so he kept fighting in the ring after he tested positive. Considering the blood that can flow in the ring, it's irresponsible of him to take even the slightest chance with that.
Tommy goes back and forth on the AIDs issue himself. On the one hand he says it's a "conspiracy", on the other hand, he regrets his promiscuous behavior and says how it is possible for a heterosexual man to catch AIDs. It sounds like he was conflicted, so I can see why the family wouldn't want to release the cause of his death.

His wife claims he died of Guillain-Barre syndrome, but it only has a death rate of 4% and most people recover from that. So, it's possible he did die of that, but not likely.
Technically, you don't die of AIDs, you die from diseases you can't fight off cuz you have AIDs. If you want, you can have a mod change my title to "had AIDs and died"...if that would make you feel better. (I have no problem with that.)

Terribly sad. I watched one of his last fights where he got destroyed in the ring. He was clearly not fit for the fight and this was after the HIV diagnosis news hit the press.

My sympathies to his family and friends.

I can't believe we're fighting over this man we did not know and his cause of death.

And the fact that he regretted the way he basically threw away everything due to his sexual behavior. I know some young people today are as out-of-control as Tommy was, hopefully they will read the articles posted about his death and re-think their choices.

Tommy says that he only had heterosexual sex and still contracted AIDs, but he also noted that he was very promiscuous. He never mentioned any use of drugs (with needles)...at least from what I've read.

I was reading some other publications concerning his death last night Chrystal. All I read said he died from complication due to AIDS. He did at one time denied there was even such a thing as AIDS.
