Border Patrol agent appeared to be ambushed by illegal immigrants, bashed with rocks before death

Illegal immigrants appeared to have “ambushed” two U.S. Border Patrol agents near the Texas border with Mexico and bashed their heads with blunt objects -- possibly rocks -- killing one agent and sending another to a hospital in serious condition Sunday, a National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) official told Fox News.

Rogelio Martinez, 36, was killed and another agent, who has not been identified, was injured while they were patrolling the Big Bend Sector, leading authorities to scour West Texas for the attackers, officials said. Although few details about the incident have been released, Brandon Judd, the president of the NBPC, told Fox News on Monday it appeared Martinez and the second agent were “ambushed” by a group of illegal immigrants.

“We don’t know exactly what happened because we weren’t there. However, just from agents that were working in the area, reports are saying it was an attack and it would appear to be an ambush,” Judd said.

He added: “There’s a high likelihood this was an assault on the agents.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has offered a reward of up to $20,000 "for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible" for the attack.

Martinez and his partner suffered traumatic injuries to the head and other injuries such as broken bones, FBI El paso said in a news release. Judd earlier told Fox News Martinez died of blunt force trauma to the head, indicating the attackers most likely used a rock or rocks during the assault on the two agents. The area surrounding where the attack occurred also indicated rocks were likely used as weapons. An FBI official also said that, counter to initial reports, neither agent was shot.

Build. A. Wall.

This doesn't mean that folks can not or should not come in legally, and be able to immigrate. Doesn't mean some of our immigration laws don't need to be fixed. But we need a wall.

This is a story from 2017 which has never been proven. Are there any new facts which point to illegal immigrants?

100% agree. We not only should be protecting our own citizens and legal residents, but not put these agents into situations where a wall would reduce such attacks on them.

It remains unknown. Why the title says alleged. The agent was found face up in a culvert. If he fell to his death it was a 10 foot fall.

Did the officer who wasn't killed recover?

What leads to the headline 'ambushed by illegal immigrants' as opposed to 'ambushed by unknown persons', which would be more accurate?

Good question. The account of the surviving agent was Martinez was searching for human activity near a sensor which indicated movement.

The agent didn’t die?
One did, one didn't but what does that have to do with what I wrote? The accusation is that illegal immigrants killed the agent but there is no evidence to support that.

Did the officer who wasn't killed recover?
Yes. He was released from the hospital a few after the incident with no knowledge of their shift. There isn't anything since then which says that he recovered that missing time frame.

People jumped to the conclusion that the agents were attacked, so the headline is incorrect. Further investigation found no evidence of a struggle or weapons. They suugested that the agents may have fell into the culvert while following possible tracks and were injured on the rocks in the culvert.

November 2017.....anyone find updated material on this?
Snopes has a story late November 2018 which says no determination has been made. I would think that an autopsy would have been released or the FBI would have given an update but I can't find anything.

Also Border Patrol agent not killed by rocks in ambush

FBI officials from 37 field offices interviewed more than 650 people, and found no evidence of a “scuffle, altercation or attack,” the AP reported.

I guess it could be that everyone is biased.

Yep, 1 killed 1 survived.
If he hit head first sure even a two foot drop would do that. But he was found face up.
What does face up have to do with it? A blow to the back of the head can kill as easy as one to the front can. We also don't know exactly who fell first or who may have fallen on whom and added further injuries and prevented fatal injuries. What happened after the original impact? He could have rolled or bounced to a face up position? You seem to assume something happened without knowledge of what did happen.
