  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm honestly sorry if you were offended....so this is my last post in this thread. ... So, I'll just drop it.
Im SO not offended. Please, please, please don't stop posting in this thread.

That's what the winky smiley thing was for... I was just teasing. Your points and opinions are just as valid as anyone else on this earth.

I think this discussion is becoming pointless... I really don't think this is an issue of enough weight to cause so much controversy, just wanted to put in my two cents like everyone else.
But thats what Internet forums are for. Seriously. You should see some of the idiocy out there on some of them.

I had my ears, nose (though i don't wear that one any more) and my eyebrow pierced. (Only that one got ripped out when i took my top off! Yikes!) so the only thing i wear now are ear rings. I like the look on some people, but others can take it too far all together! lol

The only thing wrong with piercings are the people who cant see past them. They're the only ones who get distracted by them. They're the problem not the piercing.
Very well said...

I agree, and the same thing goes for tattoos.. and probably a lot more things than we would tend to like to admit...

Without getting off the topic... How do we view Single Mothers'?

There are a lot of instances where we could take things at face value and make a quick judgement, but Christ has taught us to love all people... including the prositutes and the people society sees us being 'sinners' -

We need to learn not to judge a persons motives.

To love people unconditionally.

There really is no reason why it should bother you if someone else has piercings.

Concern yourselves only with your own choices.

Okay this may sound silly, but this was my excuse at one time to get a couple christian tattoos (even though I know this topic is for piercings, same same): We all know that our bodies are to be treated as a temple. ... so why not decorate our temples with Christian artwork?!? ... that was my excuse and now I regret what I did.

i dont think it really matters, but I don't agree with a lot of statements criticising people who are uncomfortable around tattoos/piercings and saying they purposefully dress in a certain way to get a reaction from Christians, because I think it's all about not putting stumbling blocks in front of others. By making a point of blatantly showing off those things to people who aren't used to it or think it's wrong it could cause someone else to sin. It's not necessarily about whether it's right or wrong to get a piercing, but the fact that we should be able to put aside our selfish desires of "I'm doing this because I want to and I don't care what they think" and be loving to fellow Christians. Paul illustrates this perfectly in the Bible when he talks about not eating food offered to idols. One person might be perfectly fine with it, and another person might not.

another thing, having a piercing/tattoo doesn't make you 'cool', or able to fit in with a certain group. And NOT having a piercing/tattoo doesn't make you 'uncool' and unable to fit in with that group.

Hmmm... very interesting discussion. I personally think it's fine to have tattoos and piercings, although some people do go overboard with the piercings. I see a lot of people quoting the law. I really don't find that relavent. As some have already stated, it seems that some christians like to pick and choose what suits them from the law, and not think much about the rest of the law. How many of you eat pork or shellfish? Are you sinning? Are you convicted by it?

As for WWJD, I don't think he'd get a piercing. But let me ask you this. Did he ever eat pork? Of course not. If you were eating a pork chop and Jesus showed up at your house, would you invite him to eat the pork with you? My guess is he probably would eat the pork. I could be wrong.

I love this thread! I've only read the first 4 pages, but I've gotta post -- then I'll read the rest of them.

1 Sam. 16:7 = But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart." (emphasis mine)

I read a terrific article from the Jan./Feb. 2001 issue of Today's Christian Woman titled "Help! My Kid Wants Blue Hair!" by Nancy Kennedy. (Click to read it.) It really emphasizes that our appearance isn't half as important as our witness and how we serve our Creator. C'mon....who else would've given giraffes those long necks and legs, or made a long-necked ostrich that's stupid enough to think a predator can't see it if it sticks its head in the ground?

Personally, the most I've had is 3 in one ear and 4 in the other. Currently I've got 2 in each ear and a tongue stud. I've had that for 2 1/2 years, and it took awhile before my parents gave up talking me into taking it out permanently. This came up in a Bible Study discussion once...a guy, Jamie, told us about this girl who tried to *spiritualize* her tongue stud by saying it would help her not to lie. Gimme a break! Just admit you wanted it, and be content with that!

Isaiah 53:5 = But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Just a spin - I'm not personally the tattoo / piercing type, as it brings nothing to my life and may cause difficulties in my ability to serve where I am today. I would probably discourage people in this culture from getting them.

However, if tattoos or piercing were an aid to be able to be able to witness to people of certain cultures - say inner city gangs or aborigines, would you be willing to get a tattoo or piercing?

I did not read all the posts, I am too lazy and it is too late. I personally already have a set opinion, so sorry if I repeat anything a lot. You cannot argue would Jesus do it, Jesus would not be on the internet arguing over body piercings. People who think that piercings and tattoos look like heathens, welll, I think they have Religion and not Christ (sorry for them, they decieve themselves) They should get to know the person before they decide anything, and then if they think the person is traped in sin or whatnot, call it on them. I have had small group leaders at my church, strongly recomended by the most old school, King James only pastor ever, who had both his ears pierced, the pastor did not care, you know why, because the pastor knew this guy was serious and mature in Christ. Getting pierced is no different than wearing a abercrombie shirt, or wearing a thrift store shirt, either your into fasion, or just like that style.
