I think it is mainly peer pressure that people get their bodies pierced. Each generation that comes on tries to "gross out" the other. What will it be like in 40 years, will every one try to look like Michael Jackson's plastic surgeries?

It's an interesting topic, good points brought up from both sides of the issue.

This is what I think. I think it is good abstain from piercing of any kind (including ears). But if you really feel you need to have a creative outlet or an aesthetic need, it is good also. That is just like saying it is good to abstain from drinking. But if you really feel you must, it is good to drink as well. The disconnect is this; the latter (in both cases) exposes yourself to sin more than the former. For example, pretty much 90% of people will say ear piercings especially on girls is acceptable. 50% will say belly piercings are acceptable, 30% will say a nipple piercing is acceptable...I could go on and the percentage will drop continually. How come? It is because we are aproaching territory where we can clearly identify as "morally wrong". It is because piercing (like drinking) can be abused. A specific example, a lot of the world uses piercing for sexual prowess or medals of kinkyness. Piercing brings you closer to that than not piercing. Motives have a lot do with it and when it comes to motives we can only speak for ourselves.

I do not drink nor have any piercings.

donny you also might wanna go back to lev and read that passage in its total context, and then do word studies, cultural studies, and tradition studies, if you did you would find out that the reason that was put into the Bible was because it was a cultural tradition (pagan) that during war if your friend was killed you would cut/tattoo your skin with their name so that you wouldnt forget it, that is the true meaning of the passage and why it was deemed a sin because it glorified people and not God

Is there any particular reason Jesus would not get a body piercing, if He lived today? Probably not something like a nipple piercing, of course, but other than personal likes/dislikes why wouldn't he get a nose ring?

Using your reasoning then you should also make sure you don't shave and grow your sideburns out.

Each generation is different. Each generation does things the one previous thinks is weird, unacceptable and wrong.

Dont say use scripture to say something is wrong when it's really just persons that can't accept something different.

I'd put money down you parents dissaproved of some of the things you did because it wasn't something "their generation" would have done.

In terms of it comming close to the end of times, I definitely think not. We won't be able to imagine what the conditions will be prior to that happening.

Hey, interesting thread. I have to wonder why msjones started it- she seems closed to any idea against her tounge ring. Just a thought. I just think we have to reason through our motives for things like piercings, and then judge if it violates our concience. Personally, I'm not a fan of multiple piercings or tatoos. I find them unnatural and distracting, and often they draw attention where it should not be drawn. Anyway, that's my point of view.

I was born in 1960, so have seen a lot of changes over the past 40-some years. I remember the Leave It To Beaver-like days of the early 60's (Gee Wally) and remember when hair started getting longer and longer during the late 60s as the Vietnam War escalated and as men were landing on the moon. The 70's saw a lot of interesting hairstyles and fashions, and saw the rapid rise and fall (Thank goodness!) of disco. The 80's were a decade all to itself, and was probably my favorite.

The only thing wrong with piercings are the people who cant see past them. They're the only ones who get distracted by them. They're the problem not the piercing.

Seriously though, I don't think the idea behind this thread was to give the message" Go out and get a tattoo, it's the new way to witness".

I think the message was more along the lines of “It’s ok to get a piercing or tattoo if you want to".

You are right and it is about attitude, but the first thing we are confronted with is appearance. Many can't get past that. Also with appearance comes a "common ground" or "like-mindedness" between two or more individuals. We don't automatically see someone’s attitude. That comes through getting to know someone.
