They had put up a website for people to submit names for their new research vessel, which people could vote for. Someone submitted "Boaty McBoatface" as a joke, but the Internet being what it is ...

Needless to say, they did not name their vessel after the most popular entry but instead named it "Sir David Attenborough", however as a nod to the lunacy of the Internet and maybe to remind themselves to not ever again give an important task to the unwashed masses, they announced that the winning entry would be used on the submersible.

I think they handled it very well and think it's great they've found a way to use the name Boaty McBoatface.
