  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

“But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a
stumbling block to the weak” (1 Corinthians 8:9).
Our liberty is not worth another’s walk with God.
If something God allows would lead another to sin, we need to avoid it.
We are given great freedom as Christians, but the greatest is the freedom
to consider others’ welfare over our own.

I understand, it just ends up sowing too much guilt and sin into the female person for my taste. When Paul said that he was talking about eating food and causing young Christians to think you are being a sinner. He wasn't really saying not to steal a mans self control and responsibility to be moral from him, because that's so easily done by not covering up the body you were born into.

Only in how someone comes down on the person in question.

I have a problem with Christian women wearing skimpy clothing and it
has nothing to do with lust.

Not all men have a problem with lust but I'm not about to put on a slip
dress that barely covers my boobs and my bottom to find out which ones don't have
a lusting problem lol!

I have a problem with ministers dressing casual in church and preaching/
teaching God's Word but I don't force my opinions on them, I do pray
a lot about the matter though and oddly enough the minister
has taken to wearing dress slacks and tucks in his shirt-tail,
instead of wearing jeans and leaving his shirt tail hanging out like the
younger crowd does.
This is something that has been going on since I was a teen in the 80's--
ministers sought to "dress down" trying to "relate" to the younger crowd...
I didn't like it then either.

I wasn't implying you are anything. I was saying your feelings are your responsibility, when inka expressed this you said that would be difficult if she was before the congregation.

The topic is about dress codes in church and for women it is commonly excessive and for the reason of men lusting.

I said it would difficult to look away from a scantily clad woman in church if she were the preacher.

I have never seen a church that has had a higher standard of dress for women than white/pink collar office work of a given period has required. I'm not saying that should be the standard, but if it's no more than the same woman would wear to serve her earthly master, I would not characterize it as "excessive."

With the salary most ministers make, and the teaching that money is bad, no one should ever expect a preacher to dress in a suit.

I don't think anyone has said that a preacher must dress in a suit.

So what are we arguing about then?

The OP--a Brit, I note--asked:

"Do you think that in a Sunday church service it is ok for the Preacher to wear jeans?"

My first response was a question: What's everyone else wearing?

I don't think I ever got an answer to that question.

"Modest, non-ostentatious" is what I would argue is the scriptural mandate. Whether that includes or excludes jeans depends on the mores of the congregation.

There is a saying: "Never offend people with style when you can offend them with substance." I think that saying is strongly implicit in scripture. We are going to offend people with the gospel...but we should not offend them by the way we dress.

What does that even mean? Reality? Reality is men commonly say that a scantily dressed woman is tempting them

"Reality" means not taking seriously your little hypothesis that if women pastors do not dress in a clerical robe, it means that they're going to be "scantily dressed" and cause all the men in the congregation to lust after her. No, that is not reality, OK?

Yes, and as well, it means "modest" does not immediately leap to "wrapped in styrofoam" or a burqa.

Of course you're right, but what a ridiculous sideshow this particular point is.

Has anyone not seen Joyce Meyer on TV? If you have, you've seen a woman pastor dressed like a woman pastor (if it's not in a church that favors robes). Have the men in the audience been observed to have their tongues on the floor? No.

Woman pastors do not dress like the Real Housewives of Wherever!

You can't please everybody, so why put some much care on what others think? Why not just be yourself and let the haters hate, which they're very good at?

If Timothy could get circumcised to avoid offense, I think a pastor can wear a pair of Dockers if he knows that blue jeans would offend his congregation.
