hi... i really enjoy this song and i sort of agree and relate to it. i am fully a christian and i practice my beliefs but i find alot of truth to these lyrics (not that God enjoys our suffer but that this whole world is pretty screwed up and its can be kind of hard to see God in it.) i guess i would like some imput as to what you all think of this. anyway, here are the lyrics. "blashemos rumors" by depeche mode.

Girl of 16
Whole life ahead of her
Slashed her wrists
Bored with life
Didn't succeed
Thank the lord
For small mercies

Fighting back the tears
Mother reads the note again
16 candles burn in her mind
She takes the blame
It's always the same
She goes down on her knees
And prays

I don't want to start
Any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's
Got a sick sense of humour
And when I die
I expect to find Him laughing

Girl of 18
Fell in love with everything
Found new life
In Jesus Christ
Hit by a car
Ended up
On a life support machine

I don't want to start
Any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's
Got a sick sense of humour
And when I die
I expect to find Him laughing

Summer's day
As she passed away
Birds were singing
In the summer sky
Then came the rain
And once again
A tear fell
From her mother's eye

I don't want to start
Any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God's
Got a sick sense of humour
And when I die
I expect to find Him laughing

I think it is a very powerful and moving song that deals more with the loss of faith that many people suffer than any real anti-God sentiment.

Many people do feel this way and when Dave Gahan wrote this song he summed up their despair and disinfestations almost perfectly. As a volunteer councillor I have lost count of how many times I have heard similar heart breaking stories of the loss of faith.

As Staugustine68 points out, take it in context, they also released “Personal Jesus”

You’re own Personal Jesus,
Some to hear your prayers,
Some one who cares.

Shows something of a pattern in their song writing, in that they often deal with pain, loss and anguish and how religion can either help or fail a person when they need it most.*

Ghost

* And people wonder why they get requested a lot at Goth clubs :)

i'm just curious... when they say God's got a sick sense of humour, do they mean as in He does things to us that we'll grow up and laugh about, or that He really does have a sick sense of humour and does things to us so He can have a giggle? i believe He does have a sick sense of humour in that He does things to us that, while they seem horrible at the time, you find out He did it for the better good and it can be quite comical in the end.

I love this song...I can relate to the chorus alot...I've been through that kind of anguish and I know how bad it hurts and how its important to get that anguish out....and I agree with DJ_Ghost and his thoughts about the songs not really dealing with an anti-God sentiment...but rather an agonizing loss of faith...I also know how that feels and it burns your soul alive...

BTW....Depeche Mode RULES!
