Birth pangs describes this present world as in turmoil, suffering the pains of labor. What are these labor pains? They are the labor pains of this present fallen world as it is perishing, but which shall eventually give rise to that new world in which we hope.

These birth pangs are not signs of the end, they are the present reality of suffering in this world. When was the world without wars, rumors of wars, kingdoms rising against one another, famines, disease, and natural disasters?

The reason why our Lord says these are not the end yet but only birth pangs is because these should not cause us to believe the world is ending, but to understand that these are merely symptoms of a hurting creation. A creation that will, one day, be liberated from its bondage, Romans 8:18-23.
