• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

There is no way anyone here will judge you at all, I am so glad you posted. First off many start out on drugs/alcohol abuse for the reasons of self medication.
Can you talk to your doctor about this, do you see a mental health doctor?

It is good you are thinking about stopping alcohol as it is a depressant in the brain, and if you are already taking meds for something else, the combo of the 2 may be extremely depressive. Again talk to your doctor, and perhaps they can prescribe you something that doesn't have that side affect.

There are many factors that could be contributing to your depression. My suggestion would be to discuss your depression with a psychiatrist, if you have not already. OCD is a challenging anxiety disorder to learn to live with, but it can be managed with medications and therapy.

Many people self-medicate with alcohol. I have done that many times. I have now learned to call my psychiatrist and discuss things with him, and he often will adjust my medication, instead of me drinking over the symptoms.

The irony of alcoholism is that I often drank to numb myself from my depression, knowing full well that alcohol is a depressant to begin with. That creates a vicious cycle of drinking, depression, drinking more, more depression, ad infinitum.

If you have not already sought out a psychiatrist, I urge you to get one. Also, individual psychotherapy is priceless. In the meantime, participating in AA helps me tremendously.
