  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Bikinis, Right or Wrong

The teens down south (in the christian only spot) had a discussion on this. I would be interested in view points. Now, we all do not accept the bible here, but I would like to know how others think, if the Bible was true. Let just say the Bible is right on the point of dressing immodestly. Now i will ask the question, is it immodest to wear a bikini (revealing style), does it depend if it is at the beach or not. What about privately.

Please try to back your answers.

It's a bit complicated for me.

I feel that most of the commands regarding proper clothing in the Bible were rooted in the social standards of the writers' times. Therefore, if it is considered inappropriate by society to wear such revealing things, then we should not do it.

However, today most people don't think anything of seeing a woman walking around in a bikini (at a beach or pool, of course. The reaction would be very different in the workplace). As long as it's being worn in the proper place and not in a purposefully seductive manner, I'm not sure that it's wrong to wear them. Now, since thongs and such are still considered a bit shocking, I think they are inappropriate.

In the same way, I also think that very low-cut tops and short skirts are inappropriate as well. While bikinis may be comfortable on a beach and therefore serve a pupose, I cannot think of any appropriate reason to wear skimpy clothes in day-to-day situations. Guys often complain that girls who do this tempt them unfairly, and we need to take that seriously.

For the record, I feel uncomfortable even in one-pieces and look for alternatives that give more coverage, but those are my own insecurities.

Ah yes, part of the discussion was on the white forms of swim wear, both boys and girls. I think it is just stupid for a manufacture to make a piece of clothing thats purpose is to get wet, but will be a see though when wet. Unless they want everyone to look like they are wearing nothing at a beach.

I don't see a problem with it.

You start to build immunity to getting aroused by seeing members of the opposite sex in skimpy clothing. I work as a lifeguard and see people half naked almost everyday. I don't just think of sex after seeing them if that's waht you mean. Now if someone else took my job for a day, maybe it'd take them a week or two to get over the initial "Wow!".

It's just the norm for me I suppose.

Some people probably do that on purpose, and others probably think that white just looks good on them and fail to consider the consequences.

It's entirely appropriate when it's hot out. Men's feelings are not my responsibility.

I will preface my remarks by saying that I don't have a problem with nude beaches, and I certainly think that women should be able to go topless anyplace that men can go topless.

That being said, I don't have an issue with women wearing bikinis at the beach or when sunbathing. Obviously the situation determines the dress code--a bikini that would be appropriate at the pool would be inappropriate in a courtroom or office setting. I personally believe that the social commentaries in the Bible (women dressing modestly, covering their heads, obeying their husbands, etc.) were meant for the era in which they were written and do not apply today.

Dressing immodestly means dressing as not to create lust in members of the opposite sex. So, I would say that bikinis are immodest apparels.

I think that modesty has a lot to do with the cost, style, condition, enviroment, and attitude.

Cost: Is it overly expensive? Are you wearing it to show others up, or do look reasonably good?
Style: A black dress can be dressy, or it can be casual. Does the situation call for dressy or casual wear?
Condition: Are you wearing ripped jeans to a job interview? Or a business suit to paint the fence?
Enviroment: Are you swimming at a hot beach, or going for a walk in the rain?
Attitude: Are you smug, or respectful? Are you modelling your suit for others to ogle at, or are you too busy swimming and playing in the water?

Attitude can be overstated: If you're looking to lust, you'll lust at someone in a loose cape dress or overalls and a plaid shirt. If you're trying to entice people, you can act and look sexy in a burlap sack.

Honestly, I've lusted after more girls during school time (with skirts and knee socks), than I have all summer at the country club I work at (with girls wearing thongs and skimpy tops).

Maybe you think bikinis are immodest - I don't.

It is wrong. The only reason to wear a bikini other than to display your body is to get a good tan. And I see no reason a Christian could justify wanting a good than more than being modest in public. In fact, a tan is a vanity in this culture, apart form the kind of tan one gets from simply living. Farmer tans. So even privately tanning seems anti-Christian.

I wear them in my own pool, and I wear them when I have taken swim classes. I've worn them to beaches, though I wouldn't wear a thong to a public beach, or anywhere past my own yard. What I wear in my own back yard isn't anybody's business but my own though, and the fence is high enough that they shouldn't feel offended unless they're hanging over it. I'd probably smack them in the face with a beachball if that were the case. ^_^

Thinking about it though, I suppose that certain styles of swimwear would be deemed inappropriate by parents who wanted to protect their children from unwanted advances. I don't like to see bikini's on 9 year old girls. The same could also be said for young ladies who want to protect their modesty. I'm a modest person myself, and when I do wear a bikini to the beach, I always have shorts or a cover up, which comes off when I enter the water. If people are looking at me once I'm in the water, then they're swimming down below, and that's another problem altogether.

I'm with Adiya on this one. I'll wear bikinis (The one I have even has a white top, but it has a dark backing so it's not see-through when wet.) but I usually wear shorts over the bottom half until I'm ready to get into the water. Otherwise I feel like people are staring at my butt or something. Stupid, I know. :p

Thongs are a no-no for me only in the sense that I don't like buttfloss. Or the way they look (Can you tell I don't particularly care for my rear?)

In any event, I don't think bikinis are immodest at all. If it's hot out and you're out watering plants, or if you plan on spending the day at the beach, they're great for getting a tan.
