When you're trying to lose weight or gain muscle neither are good for you. Alcohol messes with fat breakdown AND growth hormones.
Red wine does have the antioxidant thing going for it.
Then again, beer used to be rationed out on ships for it's vitamin B content.
Me personally, if I was watching the calories to the point where one beverage mattered, you can water down your wine, or go with a low cal low carb beer.
I havent found any that I'd drink regularly but Beck's Preimer is the front runner in my book at 60 cals a serving considering Heinekin light tastes like Heniken light.
On the other hand though, a 12 oz Guinness has 126 cals. Compared to soda, that's the way to go hands down. And if Guinness tastes heavy it's becase your tounge needs exercise.
One word of caution though, and I speak from experience. DO NOT DRINK GUINNESS DURING A WORKOUT. Not even on St. Patty's Day.
My friends in cross country in college had this thing where they would drink a beer, run a lap, drink a beer, run a lap, until they had done a large number. Seemed crazy to me, most people puked (Sometimes multiple times).

I'm starting a sub-challenge to this challenge with a girl at work.
30 days - $10/week. I will lose 10lbs, she will stop smoking. If only one of us makes our goal, we get all the $$. If we both do, we get our half of the $$ back.
I really just want her to quit smoking. She has two small kids and she smokes around them all the time (even if she didn't, there is the whole residue issue). It seemed like a good way to get her to do it.
Well, I want to lose the weight and she has been cutting back on how much she smokes since the beginning of the year - so...hopefully this is the shove she needs and it keeps me moving in the right direction for some more weight loss.I admire your intentions but weight loss and stopping smoking, etc, are not things other people can push you into.
The only way those ever work is when the person is ready to do it themselves.
That said, if she's ready or on the fence or something you may be the push she needs.
anywho

haha - that's great stuff! That reminds me of my buddy and I's buy in system for our weight loss comp.
you could buy "stock" in the competitors, so even if you didn't win the contest you could still make a profit in the market.

I have to admit, I've done awful. I have been dealing with a lot of issues and I have actually gained weight.
Well, today, I am taking a stand. I am no longer eating crap just because it's cheaper and easier. I am not going to eat fast food for convenience. I am no longer going to accept eating for comfort or out of boredom.
I've done really well today. I have decided I can no longer look at this as a big long term goal, because it is a huge mountain to climb. What I can do is eat right and exercise today. Anybody can make it one day. Today, I choose to do it right.
I have to wake up in the morning realizing that I only have to make it through today. That is what I have to do now.
