Biblical Theme Garden

Since it is too cold and wet and dark for me to garden, I thought up a game: Create a Biblical Theme Garden. A theme garden is where you have plants that have something in common: in this case, either plants mentioned in the Bible, or plants with Biblical-sounding names.

So I would start with Star Of Bethlehem and Aaron's Beard. What plants would you guys add?

Hyssop (agastache ssp.)

Dove tree (davidia involucrata, this one gets in on both the common and latin name!)

Cedar of Lebanon (cedrus libani)

Lenten rose (helleborus ssp.)

Fig (ficus carica)

Lily of the Valley (convallaria majalis)

Jacob's ladder (polemonium caeruleum)

Olive (eleagnus ssp.?)

Great idea- this is fun!

Good suggestions, everyone! I think I would add Angelica, too. Also Wormwood (wormwood and gall given to Christ on the cross).

Actually, olive would be Olea europea although it is only hardy to zone 9. Another to add would be Pomegranete (Punica granatum) hardy to at least zone 8. And don't forget date palms (tender and will only bear good fruit in hot desert regions with no summer rainfall).

I actually read an article in a gardening magazine that did this (I *HAVE* to go home and find this article now). Thought it was a cool idea, but I live in an apartment and don't have that many containers

Most of the plants mentioned in the Bible wouldn't grow in my area anyway, so this is just a game I play.

But you could grow a Rhododendron "Christmas Cheer" in a container on an apartment balcony, and if you get enough sun, try Lilies.

When I moved into my home, I got my dad to identify some of the plants that were growing. (He has a degree in botany, while I am totally clueless when it comes to plants and have what I call a brown thumb. My daughter, then 3 years old, had more success in her first gardening attempt last summer than I ever have.) To my surprise I have both a rose of sharon bush and lots of lily of the valley. I have thought of adding to the theme, but first I have to move some lillies so that they are growing anywhere near the rose of sharon.

I thought about doing something like this with my daughters. LOL, my youngest's name is Eden...so I could call it the Garden of Eden and Emily. Yes, I know, it's cheesy.

Grapes and figs maybe? There is tons of references to grapes and wine in the Bible, it would be nice to have some in the yard.

Definately grapes. I have lily of the valley planted by the previous owner, but now it has become a weed. It can be toxic to toddlers, so I would be careful around the plants with little kids.

How about apple trees?
