  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey gang!

I was wondering if someone can help me out here.

I've been hearing different people speak of Biblical texts like the "NA27" and the "UBS," etc. What are these texts? What are the stories behind them? Which one is considered the best? And which is used in specific translations of the Bible?

Thanks.

Yours truly in Christ,
sojourner

Hi sojourner,

"NA27" is short for Nestle-Aland's Novum Testamentum Graece - a Greek New Testament, 27th edition.
"UBS" is short for United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament; the 4th is the most recent edition.

Both NA27 and UBS use the same Greek text, which is often referred to as the critical text. All modern Bibles which are a translation from the originals base the NT on this same critical text: NASB, NIV, NRSV, NET, etc. The New King James version used what is called the Majority Text. The King James version used one variation of the Textus Receptus (TR).

Eberhard Nestle published the first edition of Novum Testamentum Graece in 1913. Later, Kurt Aland revised it. The UBS text was first published in 1966.

As for which one is considered best, most Greek scholars and translators prefer Nestle-Aland. Nestle-Aland has a critical apparatus that lists the variations in the Greek text.
