  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Thanks , guys.

I guess what I'm looking for are moral and ethical teachings which originated in Biblical writings. Are there any of those?

Do you think that any of those existed amongst other groups of people prior to this?
Which ones are absolutely unique?

Not really, Leviticus and the 10 Commandments is pretty unique. The pagan traditions during that time were very different in places like Ur and Babylon. Also many Pagan traditions don't have the credibility that the bible does(considering all that archeology has found on the bible)

If you wanna read unique read about Moses and the Exodus.

The Bible puts the ancient Hebrews' spin on pre-existing ethical norms. Though you could argue that does it originate some specific customs and rituals, which it ties into ethics by teaching that observing these customs is righteous. Did any earlier scripture set aside one specific day each week for Sabbath observance? Or forbid consuming certain foods that it labels as unclean?

So, prior to the writings of Leviticus and the 10 Commandments, everyone was murdering, raping, stealing, lying and cheating, and nobody thought any of that was wrong?

As long as one was doing such to those outside the "kingdom."

Dietary rules have been around since the ancient Egyptians and beyond. The particulars may vary, but it's the same thing - dietary rules. Same goes with the days of the week. For example - today is the day of Thor.

I have read the books of Moses, I'm just trying to pull to mind something that is clearly identifiable as being uniquely moral. So, I went to wikipedia and pulled this out:

"Examples of moral codes include the Golden Rule; the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism; the ancient Egyptian code of Ma'at ;the ten commandments of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; the yamas and niyama of the Hindu scriptures; the ten Indian commandments; and the principle of the Dessek."

It might take some time to sort through these to identify what is or is not shared or unique.

If everyone is running around murdering, stealing and looting, and no one gave it a second thought, how would any society "outside the kingdom" survive the rampant murder and mayhem?

actually yes, in a way. Look at Sodom and Gommorah, Tyre and Sidon, Babylon, Ur and Canaan. The Pagan countrys were very barbaric and even deemed to ok to sacrifice their own children to idols. It was so bad that God deemed it right to flood them all to death during the times of Noah.

An example would be is when the christian missionarys came to the New World they couldn't believe the amount of violence and barbarity of the Mayans and the tribes. Its obvious they had very little moral law or value of life

Sacrificing life to gods would actually show quite a high value placed on life. Why would you think sacrificing life would appease your gods if life had no value? It is our own morality that would deem it to be bad.

Im sorry, I guess its just wonderful to be the living "scraps" given to the fake "Gods" when they are hungry. What a raise in self esteem that must bring

I'm not saying it's great. I'm just saying it does not show that those people did not value life.

Must have been great when God ordered the death of every man, woman, and child within a city, right?

this is where knowing history comes into play. Considering most people do not know the real death stats of the inquisition.

3000-5000 people died in the actual inquisition. Out of the 70,000-100,000 that were tried
