  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am looking for a Master's Degree in Biblical Languages. I would either like to find a program that is local to the Tampa Bay area in Florida, or else a program that is available online.

Does anyone know where I could obtain a Biblical Languages degree? I am having trouble finding a program online.

Have you looked into SIL (Summer Institute of Linguistics)? I don't remember where the schools are and what programs they have. There's a school in Southern California that I was considering (called Biola University) that has a Biblical Languages graduate program through SIL. Sorry if that's not very helpful, but SIL might be a good place to start looking.

gordon-conwell has a campus in Jacksonville. By their prospectus they have a decent core in biblical languages for the MDiv, which will give the requirement for a more biblical language specific MTh option later (though at a different campus/seminary).

Just off the top of my head, I can't really think of specific programs in Biblical Languages available online. Western Seminary (based out of Portland) might have an online-only M.A. in that area of study. I know they have a graduate-level certificate in Biblical Languages that is available online. Another option is Piedmont International University, which has biblical language courses at their campus in NC, but broadcast over the internet as well, for those taking it online. Again, I know they have online-only degree options, but don't think they have any specifically in Biblical Languages. Gordon-Conwell would be a nice choice, but their Jacksonville campus doesn't offer their M.A. in Biblical Languages. I'm not certain what you want to do with the degree. If you plan on teaching on a college level, you can broaden your search to New or Old Testament studies (depending on if you want to teach Greek or Hebrew). An M.Div. that would allow you to get 18 credit hours in Greek or Hebrew would also allow you to teach one of those languages on a college level. Another option for you, if you wanted to do Greek, is the University of Florida's M.A. in Classics. Their classics program would allow you to learn Classical Greek which would allow you to easily transfer over into understanding the more "common" Koine Greek. This would also allow you teach Greek, Latin, or Classical Studies on an undergraduate level. You wouldn't get the biblical or theological studies that a good M.Div. program would give you, but it's worth a look if that's the direction you're going.
