  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Biblical command to 'turn the other cheek' doesn't mean Christians should 'tolerate tyranny'

Perhaps he would not allow politically falsehood also ? Nor greed nor desire for power; Yet no way to stop it, eh ?
That's a fair point because politicians on all sides of the spectrum have shown that they cannot be absolutely trusted. After all, they are just as human as the rest of us are. Correct?

What does He say to do with the sword? He does not say to use the sword to defend Him or themselves. He doesn’t say to kill anyone in self-defense or in defense of loved ones.
It EXPLICITLY lays it out in one of the books (or a footnote). This was included solely to fulfill the prophesy.

It had no practical purpose regardless of its designed purpose God did not even intend for it to be used effectively or it would have laid that out in the initial prophecy.

Oh. If your response is only to part of the sentence you quote, then you should be clearer about it. If you want only the "whoever seeks to save his life shall lose it" to refer only to government, you will have to explain how since the plain reading isn't that.

What do you think the context is for turning the other cheek, giving the shirt along with the cloak/coat, and going the extra mile is? The chapter goes on to preach about loving one's enemies - do you think that government is the only enemy people encounter?
Jesus talks about being a servant of man.

These messages are getting harder and harder for trump supporters to hear.

Kirk Cameron is well educated and has promoted Christian values for decades. Do you have a problem with that?

He also has a history of not being a credible source.

Though, interestingly, going the extra mile is a reference to "tyranny." The law from Rome was that any non-citizen over the age of 12, if asked by a soldier, must carry that soldiers gear for a mile. Jesus was stating that if compelled by soldiers (though not strictly that but to apply it to all areas of life) that you bear their gear a second mile, as well. It is an interesting counter point to the idea that Christians must resist tyranny.

Hm, Donald managed to co-opt the Republican Party, so why not an off-shoot of Christianity?

I have heard that before but without any citation at all.

The chapter doesn't mention anything about a soldier doing the striking, theft or coerced walking. It mentions a kingdom, tax collectors, and a hypothetical judge (don't sue, settle) but no soldiers. The chapter is not about government.

"Citations" are usually false , or being used to promote something false/ falsely. Most stories people hear , ever, world wide are false and misleading.
Perhaps "citations" are usually false, I dunno, but citations without the scare quotes say where the information came from. Apart from that, believing everything and everyone is false and misleading is a difficult pov. Sorry, bud.

Wikipedia has, at least what seems to be, a good explanation. I will admit that most sources for the claim come from Biblical scholars -- and it does appear the "mile" component may have been a local Roman version of the law. And, as the article states, the mere fact that the word "mile" is used refers to it being a reference to a Roman requirement.

It's pretty clear he is the definitive example of a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Could not be more obvious to me.

Yes, sorry for you.
For misquoting ?
I did not misquote - even your weird spacing was kept.
Mis-representing the point ?
Did I misrepresent your point? It wasn't on purpose; let me know where I got you wrong.

"Most stories people hear , ever, world wide are false and misleading." Are the people telling these false, misleading stories doing so knowingly or because they all are deceived?

Either way, I find that a sad pov.

Note in particular when citations are false, or being used to promote something false/falsely.
"Usually".
And when (or rather how many) stories are false and misleading.
"Most".
That is verified daily, historically, and most importantly throughout all the Word of the Creator - The Bible.
Next, note the post mis-representing this simple truth:

Neither everything nor everyone was stated as being false and misleading.
Okay, amend my post to add "almost". Still sad.

Kirk Cameron has some thoughts on what it really means to "turn the other cheek."
Well the Organians would take him at his word.

The Organians are incororeal energy creatures ("pure energy, pure thought"). After the climax of the episode "Errand of Mercy," Spock comments that they are "as far above us on the evolutionary scale as we are above the amoeba." They assumed humanoid form to "interact" with the Federation representatives and the Klingons.

Turn the other cheek is pretty clear. When you have to bloviate for paragraphs to explain that the plain phrase doesn’t actually mean what it clearly says, perhaps you are substituting your own theology for that of Christ.

Where in the New Testament does it say that killing in self defense is allowed?
Jesus to the disciples.Luk 22:36 - “But now,” he said, “take your money and a traveler's bag. And if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one!

I remember that Star Trek episode. It is one of my personal favorites of all of the Star Trek episodes.

I thought we already did this one. What did Jesus say to do with the sword(s)?

No one ever died from a slap. Telling you not to respond to disrespect is not the same as saying let someone kill you and don’t resist

Kirk Cameron has some thoughts on what it really means to "turn the other cheek."
The actor said intolerance, at least when it comes to evil and tyranny, is, in fact, a “very essential Christian virtue,” one which, he added, America’s founding fathers espoused.

In a Feb. 21 appearance on the “Timcast IRL” podcast with Tim Pool, Cameron touched upon a number of topics, including his fight against “religious viewpoint discrimination” in public libraries and Noah Webster’s Christian influence on education.
But it was in response to Pool’s apparent reference to a Christian Post story earlier this month about his comments on conservative Christians playing a role in America's decline by being “tolerant and accepting” that led to a lively conversation between Pool and Cameron.

Crediting a 2023 speech by entrepreneur Patrick Bet David for his comments, Pool summarized David's speech as essentially saying, “Christians in this country are good people who keep saying OK to these people, being tolerant, allowing them to live the way they want to live.
"But what happens is they push more into the institutions, they introduce dangerous, bad ideas, they start targeting kids, and now we're here where we are today."

Cameron responded by saying “turn the other cheek” and “love your neighbor” were never intended to allow for the tolerance of evil.

“… I see so many who are just tolerating evil and that’s not loving your neighbor,” he said. “At the end of the day, the two great Commandments of Christianity are to love God with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength, and the second is like it, to love your neighbor as yourself.

“If you 'tolerate' the kinds of things that bring misery to your neighbors and ultimately strip them of their liberties, you're not loving them.”
As an example, he cited Just War Theory, followed by most Christians for over a thousand years, which states that if you believe your enemy is preparing to attack, you are justified in defending your own people by attacking first.

Cameron said the Constitution is another means of mitigating against overreach by tyrants.
“We don't tolerate tyranny, either from the outside or the inside, and that is a very essential Christian virtue, is to not tolerate that type of thing,” he added.

The Founding Fathers are not the infallible rule of faith for the Christian life.
