  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Just wondering how you all study the bible. I have a hard time sitting down and spending hours on study, but I want to go deeper in the word. What works for you?

Go to uni and do a theology degree. We need more educated Christians.

I find it's always good to have a specific, manageable project guiding any study.

Ask if you can preach a sermon at your church, if it's allowed, or lead a Sunday school class, or lead (or co-lead) a small groups class. Then you'll have a good excuse to delve into whatever subject matter is most pressing.

I love Otis Sellars and the Word of Truth ministries work, their website is called seedandbread.org, has tons of free studies on it for almost every area of God's word. I also enjoy using Bullingers companion Bible which has many good references in it. I also struggle with doing a ton of reading consecutively so I can relate there, even if I want to try to. I most enjoy my study groups time together, we get together as often as possible to get into God's word. Bible studies are a great way to come together and discover the truths of the Bible!

What works best for is having to produce something from it. I do lots of related reading, but in the learning isn't a process of absorbtion but of meaning-making.

It doesn't really matter what I'm producing - an essay for the course I'm doing, a five minute reflection for staff morning prayer at school, or a full blown 20 minute sermon - something that forces me to get some kind of structured coherent message from the text makes me focus my thoughts in a way that simple reading and meditating won't do on their own.

Small study groups work for me. I emphasize small, because it allows the group to bond more cohesively and become comfortable enough with one another to open up and share. I especially love Beth Moore studies and Kay Arthur. They go into depth on the word and direct their teachings to women. Also, my church does some sort of thru the bible in a year program every other year. I also like daily devotions i.e., Upper Room, My Daily Bread. Sometimes I read more than the recommended passages. But study groups are number 1 for helping me with bible study.
