  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm using the inductive approach, but that's really just reading the whole Bible straight through and letting it interpret itself. (Generally, you "title" each page or chapter yourself, but you also make notes like dates, who pronouns are referring to, and so forth.)

I think if you go devotion, you're going to read into the text pretty much what the devotion tells you to, whether it's really there or not.

I personally like a yearly plan that is chronological, but still mixes up the daily readings so you get some OT, some NT, and a Psalm or two every day. Keeps things hopping, especially when you get to a section that you find a little "dry".

I always start by reading a book through a few times and then moving on from there.
The plethora of study literature is overwhelming. Zondervan, Eerdmans, InterVarsity are among some of the reliable publishers.
The small devotional studies are usually inexpensive enough to give a shot.

Once you start to reply on what others say about it, then you could well be heading for trouble.

You read the Bible, ask the Holy Spirit for help and eventually I am sure that you will come up with the truth.

Remember the Bible does not contradict itself.

When it says in Exodus that a certain thing is the way God wants things done.

Then when we come over to Romans and we think, hey it says this or that and it is different to what is said in Exodus. Be careful as it is our misunderstanding of the text that is wrong, not the Bible saying a different story.

God does not change!

Hi,

Just wanted to agree with Symes. Self exploartion is the key.
We need to read the word for ourselfs, ask the Holy Spirt to reveal it's truth.

For too long people have listen to what others say is written and have no bothered to look themselves.

By all means read with somebody else, but make sure it is with someone you trust and make sure they are constantly pointing you back to the word.

For sure, rely on the Word and the Holy Spirit.

Let me caution here that the Holy Spirit will never lead you along a path that is different to the Bible.

The Bible is from Genesis to Revelation.

God's will is revealed in it all.

At the same time, God has given us brains to understand so we must read intelligently. The Bible was written to us, but to people who died in a culture long ago. Even though the book is eternally relevant it has ties to it's time that need to be understood. Like others have posted, there is good study material out there. One of my personal favorites is How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Fee and Stuart. They discuss how to read the types of material in the Bible and how to interpret ancient texts for our time.

The main thing to remember is that if someone comes along and says a certain thing about the Bible and it does contradict Scripture then we must follow Scripture.

There are too many people today that say much that cannot be found in Scripture. A classic example is this movie by Mel Gibson. There is so much material in the movie that is not in the Bible. Most people do not see the danger in it.

Don't forget that the Holy Spirit is not the only thing involved in interpretation... Satan has his own words that he want to put in your head too... :)

Also, the HS doesn't just give out free interpretations... you have to do some work and research too. He works WITH us, not FOR us.

The Lord said Seek and Ye shall find, ask and it shall be given you. The Lord said Seek ye the kingdom of God first and then all these things shall be added unto you.

The Lord talks to you as you read the stories as told by Matt, Mark, Luke, and John the things of the spirit that He wants to understand will come upon your heart as this applies to you in your situation. You will find that the words seem to lift off the page and open up in a new light in your mind as the Holy Spirit works to open your mind on the understanding. It will be different that what the world says, and Trust God, it is ok. God is consistant through out the Bible and if he said it once, he will say it again somewhere else to reinforce it. He says that He stand at the door and knocks and if you hear his voice and let him in he will talk with you and you can talk with him.

This is a true experience you can have by praying to God and asking for him to come into your heart. He is the author and finisher of your faith. Let the Holy Spirit guide you through reading of the word and prayer. You will find yourself learning more about the truth and the difference between what the religious world says and what God says. Talk to God, He will lead you in all truth. Trust Him, and you will be guided to those that can help you along the journey with God.

I have found that concordance on different words can bring subject matter together, after all in God's time this old world has been around six days, so in God's eyes the OT and NT are just a few days apart.

What is the best way to study your bible? To just sit down and read it or use a devotion book with the bible or some other book?
Hi there!

I recommend two approaches. Buy two Bibles.

But a good study Bible (I recommend the KJV)... and then buy something that is easy-reading or modern translation.

Use the easy reading for general understanding and because it is easier to understand... and just use it to read and enjoy the stories and the poetry, etc.

But go to the better translation and use the Hebrew and Greek word meanings or a good commentary to supplement a "Bible study". My favorite is John Gill, but Adam Clarke or Matthew Henry are good also. There are many "good" and even more "bad" commentaries on the market. I usually use crosswalk.com or blueletterbible for dictionaries or commentaries.
