Well, here's another pic. I just took it today. It's a lot larger than the last ones, so be warned... :)

GIVETHANKS: I have a quick question for you. One of your pictures seems to be in a hallway or something, and it's like rainbow colored. Is that actually the color of the place you took the pic??

Kwizzitive -- I WAS talking about you when I mentioned I liked the colors.

You washed out the color of the fire hydrant with your flash though. if you can retake the picture, try without flash, or with more diffuse flash (put a piece of tissue paper over your flash if nothing else). Then you'd be able to bring out the bright red in photoshop without dealing with the reflection of your flash.

On another note, here's some stark flash pictures of bike racers at the local track. Actually I got some okay pictures without the flash (before it started to get dark) but they're always a bit blurry. I forgot to reset the shutter speed for one, and I got the cool blur which I'll have to try to recreate better another time.

Thanks givethanks, that's really awesome.

1.This one is a little off center, but I thought it turned out cool anyway.
2 & 3. These two were taken when it was getting dark, so the flash was used.

I took the one of the tree because the leaves were brighter at the ends of the branches. Really pretty.

OH, and the fire hydrant pic was taken when it was almost dark too, or I may not have used the flash. I guess it depends, I never know what I'm thinking, I just do. ;)

GuitarBuddy -- It looks like you cut the saturation from all but the orange shade, and then deselected the center to keep the color there. If I'm right, you should take another look at the top left side of the flower. You have a bit of a halo around the flower where you missed part of the orange hue. It's most noticable in the top left because the background is the same color, but it's apparent in other places as well. If you can't get the flower entirely colored without adding color somewhere else, try roughly selecting the improperly colored parts after you've dealt with most of the background. Sometimes the edges are STILL a pain though...

To be fair, I really like the picture and I LOVE you idea to draw out the flower! As your first attempt, it CERTAINLY turned out better than when I started playing with desaturating different hues!

As a couple of other suggestions, I would like to see what it looks like with ALL the green desaturated. It would mean two different steps, but it would be neat if the center of the flower showed only orange petals and the yellow pollen with desaturated greens. Also, just for fun, try changing the hue (after you've desaturated all the parts you want) to to mess with the color of the flower.

Thanks for sharing your work!

Actually I used quick mask mode in Photoshop, then after I got the selection desaturated the rest. I see that around the edge, I'll work on it somemore tonight maybe and try some of your ideas. The edges are really a pain...I'll try to fix the halo effect.

Thanks! and thanks for your ideas, can't wait to try them out!!

Here's something you might try. Note that I'm using Photoshop Elements (because I'm poor) but I'm certain this works in any Photoshop.

Go to "Adjust Color" (in the Enhance Menu) and pick Hue/Saturation. Pick the "Reds" however, any one you pick besides master will do in this situation. Set the saturation at zero -- something you can do just to see what you've selected whether you want to desaturate or not. Then move the sliders (the triangles are for fading which you don't want in this situation) until you've greyed out all the colors you want and left the colors you DON'T want. I attached a screen shot so you'll get the idea.

Unfortunately, the ground is also orange, though just less saturated, so you'll still have some work to do, but this trick is really useful for MANY situations -- like if you wanted to make a blue sky bluer, you could select the hues of blue you wanted, and then saturate them a bit more. Of course it works best when you have contrasting colors, with few hues in between, but it's a handy trick either way!

1. This is an awesome pic that my cousin took while she was at our house. I think it's really pretty with the sky behind it and everything.
2. And this is one I took. Nothing in comparison to Lydia's tho.
I don't really have a program in which to edit my pics. All I have is Paint Shop Pro. One of the earlier versions of it.
Nice pictures, guys! Keep it up!
