These photos on here take my breath away- unbelievable!!!
I can't really take pictures but we had an awesome sunset here the other night that was just stellar and I thought I would share what God gave me for my viewing pleasure. Strange how the sun is so warm and bright and it is raining on the mountains nearby. ( I am on the westcoast of British Columbia, we get a lot of that around here :D )

I hope this works...I still have to get this whole attachment thing down. Wish me luck

hahaha! I am so new at this I couldn't even tell you!!
ummm....6X optical zoom <---- does that tell you anything?
It is overlooking New Westminster and parts of Vancouver.
oi , one day I will learn.

I took this pic of a leaf the other day- what should I have done to change it? I wish it wasn't so dark but again I couldnt even tell you what settings I had it at- that's the beauty of digital, you can go and go as much as you like and get rid of what doesnt work for you!
I was hoping to catch some light underneath the leaf so to get enough of the silhouette -and I got the water droplets enough. I wanted it to be bright enough to see, but still dark, just not THIS dark.

Any ideas would help and I will experiment with my camera.

Photography is painting with light. To change your picture you change the direction and the intensity or exposure to the light source. Ansel Adams invented the "Zone system" to describe the relative relationship of light or exposure within a particular photograph. Camera meters generally try to expose a photograph in Zone V (18% grey) which for most subjects is considered properly exposed. However, interesting photographs, like the one you took, have areas that are very dark (zone II or III) and highlights that are very light (Zone IX or X). To change the interplay of light in a photograph do what it takes to bring light to areas that you want. (The other alternative is to pick film, paper, and development techniques ((such as dodging and burning) to control the zones.)

For example, in your photograph, the main light is high, in front of the camera, and a bit to the left. You don't have much "fill" light right behind the camera, and no light coming from underneath the leaf as you suggested. This is why the subject appears so dark. You can use a flash or reflector to put some light on the subject from your behind or behind right. This light should not be as intense as the main light since you want to keep the dramatic lighting and highlights. A flash or reflector from underneath will give light behind the leaf, and if strong enough will allow the transparency of the leaf to shine through.

This is a very simplistic explanation of Zone photography, and if you are interested look up Ansel Adams and Zone photography. (He also wrote a book if you prefer reading from real paper.)

Here are a couple of MY photos. Hello, by the way, to all you peoples out there. I'm kinda flaky around here as I tend to get bored of forums, but I read them a lot more than I post! Anyway, Here's a couple more for you. The first two are from England. The second is actually from the L'abri near Liss -- It's a GREAT place to study God and SUCH a beautiful site! Anyway, check it out at http://www.labri.com , there's sites around the world!

Anyway, those first two were done with a cheap 35mm camera, while the last three were done with my Nikon Coolpix 5700.

The first is a very odd dog I found at a farmer's market near my house. The next two are of fireworks (duh) and both were 2 sec exposures at ISO 100, the first at F3.2 and the second at F7.3.

I don't know if this will work, but I am going to try to add two of my older photos. These were both taken with Kodak HIE. The one of the pond was handcolored. I have been working with digital a little the last few years, attempting to get the same effect as infrared. There is a learning curve...

Regards,
Theodora

I love taking pictures of my sweet girls. I've gotten to the point where I love the pictures I've taken of them better than the professional portraits we've had done. I do realize that most will not find the same joy that I do in photos of my kids ;) but these are some of the one's I'm most proud of. There are some technical problems with each of them, I think, but, oh well. :)

Love, Heather

I absolutely LOVED those pics from your first post....children's pictures are so precious!! heeh!!

btw, I love the shadows you played w/ on that last one :)

Photography is a big hobby of mine. I mainly photograph horses though. I've got millions of pictures, if anyone would like to see more, just e-mail me or ask on here. ;)

CameHome.... those pictures are stunning!!
The white one almost looks like a magical creature- so beautiful.
I know the horse is beautiful but it also takes a great photographer to make it look like that!

Nice stuff.

Heather
Thank you, Heather. :) I'm lucky to have such a "model" though. Krisaad, the grey horse, is so animated!

here's a few of mine from vacation to Virginia. i would like some critiques.
the first couple are on the metro on our way to Georgetown (Washinton DC) for dinner. the third is in Georgetown on a rainy night in the cute little city. then one is the plane ride and one is the evening sun out the window of the house we stayed at in Virginia.
