We are talking about the standards of historiography in the first century when the NT Letters and Gospels were written. For my PhD dissertation, just completed, it required that I examine the historical method used by historians, including:

• Herodotus of Halicarnassus(ca 484 – 425 BC), The History of Herodotus, 1890.

• Flavius Josephus (ca AD 37-101), The Jewish Antiquities,

• Tacitus, also known as Publius Cornelius Tacitus, or Gaius Cornelius(ca 56-120), The Works of Tacitus: The Annals.
• Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus (ca AD 69-after 122), The Lives of the Twelve Caesars.

We need to examine the requirements of history of those from that era in which the NT is located.

Do I dispute the importance of witnesses in the court system? Of course not. They are very important.

However, do I critically examine the eyewitness testimony of those who provide evidence? Of course I do. That applies to the conviction of murder against Brett Peter Cowan of the murder of Daniel Morcombe (judged on 21st century approach to history and witnesses), Herodutus - regarded as the father of history - according to 5th century BC standards of historiography AND the documents of Josephus, Tacitus, NT Gospels and Letters (judged by 1st century AD standards of historiography).

This whole talk of "red herring" is fundamentally disingenuous, given that I explicitly explained the relevance to the topic at hand in post #1782, which you dodged by nitpicking a completely irrelevant source, but I will gladly explain it to you again. This is what you said. You are claiming that eyewitness testimony can somehow verify the supernatural claims present in the bible. You are claiming that the fact that some 500 people claim to have seen something is proof positive that it happened. My assertion is that eyewitness testimony is not a good judge of these things. Even assuming that the claims made in Corinthians and Luke were true, why would 500 people telling you that something happened be sufficient evidence if that something is phenomenally unlikely or even impossible? Hence my questioning of "how many eyewitness accounts would you require for <unlikely or impossible scenario>" - it is not a red herring, it is directly relevant to your claim, because if 500 eyewitnesses would not be enough to confirm those things you will have understood my problem.

If I had 500 people at a hospital tell me that a bloated corpse in the morgue was sprinkled with an unknown dust and suddenly came back to life in full health and sprouted a second head, do you think I'd believe them without strong confirming evidence? Would you? I hope you wouldn't. Hell, I've heard numerous eyewitness accounts from people who told me that homeopathy really helped them (including my own father, who insists that a homeopathic remedy helped me as an infant). These are people I know personally, and who I know to be of sound mind, and I don't believe them, because I know exactly why the claim couldn't possibly be true. I'm going to need way better evidence than an assortment of people making the claim.

This is only compounded when we consider that the eyewitnesses mentioned in the bible are unnamed, and there are no contemporary records of such miracles, and that we have no original manuscripts of the gospels. With every step away, the already weak evidence of eyewitness testimony for supernatural events gets weaker and weaker. As said, I could probably find you 500 people alive today who claim to have been abducted by aliens or to have witnessed an alien abduction in progress. So you tell me. How many eyewitnesses would it take for you to believe something so improbable?

Not at all. The appeal is not to anything I've said or someone else has said, the appeal is to what God himself has said. There's no "magic" involved. If God said it, then your interpretation of the science is simply wrong.

At this point in the discussion, "God" is still only a character in a book. It may be that you hear voices, or you are reading something out of a book, but you will need more than that to show that science is sufficiently wrong so as to accommodate your bible stories.

You've missed the point of the flood: water cleanses the earth of mankind's evil. That's the point. When God brings judgment he almost always does so by using some sort of representation of himself (water or fire). In this case, it's water. Next time, it's with fire.

Actually, that's not accurate. Eyewitness testimony is often weighted less than other more reliable forms of evidence, such as DNA testing. This makes sense given what we know about the fallibility of eyewitness testimony.

What, over 4ooo years?! I don't think so?! Since the Fall people have tended not to last the entire duration of history?! There is absolutely no way that this could have happened without God. History is littered with vast political empires each in their turn have sought to eradicate the Jewish people and each in their turn have gone the way of all flesh...and yet Israel survives, not only survives but flourishes (and this in spite of all that the Divestment, Boycott and Sanctions campaign against Israel has done to undermine the Jewish state). No matter what Man does in order to try and thwart the plan and purpose of God he cannot succeed. Israel (unlike her enemies) is going nowhere.

Not true. Israel was miraculously created by God approximately 4000 years ago. The United Nations had absolutely nothing to do with the creation or modern day establishment of the state of Israel. It was the League of Nations (the forerunner of the United Nations) which agreed that the Jewish people could have 100% of Palestine (not just the 22% that she actually got, 78% being stolen from her and given to the exclusively arab Hashemite kingdom of Trans-Jordan instead) as her national homeland. It was the one and only time in history when the United States and the former Soviet Union actually voted the same way in favour of a national Jewish Homeland. In court, it is the most reliable and primary form of evidence.

Firstly, our courts are hardly beacons of logical and scientific integrity. Particularly in the past, they've shown an unjustified over-reliance on testimony, unaware or uncaring that that there are numerous studies demonstrating that human memory is horrendously unreliable. The history of the court is rife with horror stories of innocent people being sent to death or spending years in jail on the basis of 'eyewitness testimony', for crimes they were later exonerated for using vastly superior methods such as DNA testing. It may now or may have been at one time the 'primary' or most popular form of evidence in court, but that is not a point in your favor.

Secondly, not even in our profoundly flawed court system is it anywhere close to the 'most reliable' form of evidence. That is precisely why, as I've already stated, DNA evidence trumps 'eyewitness testimony' every single time.

And once again, this is all beside the fact that you don't have 'eyewitness testimony' in the first place, and neither do you accept it as sufficient in demonstrating extraordinary claims.

You are left in the absurd and illogical position of defending a standard of evidence that you cannot meet and don't even accept yourself. I am so glad these are not my problems.
