Which show of his do you like best? I really like some of his later stuff. Especially "Sunset Boulevard", "Aspects of love" and the largely ignored "The Beautiful Game". Some of his later scores are much more mature and musically complex. But I love some of the early pastiche stuff like "Starlight Express". And of course I loved "Cats". What do you all think?

I'm not a huge fan, but I do like Song and Dance a lot.

Wow, I haven't listened to Aspects of Love in years....like probably ten. I used to like that one quite a bit when I was in high school and will have to pull it out again. Thanks for the inspiration. ;)

Ahhhh, Song and Dance, haven't heard that in ages. Liked it though. Jazzbird, if you like Aspects, then I recommend you check out The Beautiful Game. It has a similar style score, with good bit of Celtic/Irish flavor thrown in. There are some great songs in that one too--"To have and to hold" (the wedding duet), "Our kind of love", "God's own country" (a hymn of love to Ireland--and probably one of Lloyd Webber's most beautiful tunes) and the title song is really cool (especially if you like soccer--since that's what its about).

I liked Joseph - Dreamcoat best. That's mostly for the story it tells. After that is Miss Saigon.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, is like the candy bar of the Broadway Stage. Although, it tastes good...you eat it too long and eat nothing else--you begin to despise candy. I like Phantom, and love Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita, is good... But the rest of his shows are just rehashing of earlier material. I think Cats, is the biggest disgrace to Theatre there is. There is no point to Cats, at all. Song and Dance, I am sorry--didnt like this show at all. Aspects of Love, only two songs from the show, I enjoy... The rest of it is BORING. By Jeeves, is cool--but the British Humor, is something I cant get into. Starlight Express, Fabricated Crap. Joseph, is okay--but just a feel good show-- nothing special. The Woman in White, heard a few songs from the soundtrack, and I can tell I would not like it all.

And Webber relies way too much on spectacle...which I think, is the ONLY reason why his shows had such long runs...to tell you the truth.

I am sorry--being a Theatre person... alot of us don't have a good opinion of Webber. But Webber's music, really introduced me to the crazy world of Theatre...so it's good for something!

Ooh good thread.

POTO was the first show I was on broadway in NYC (at the Magestic)- I nearly bawled my eyes out the whole way through, just because I was seeing it :p

But POTO, Miss Saigon, Joshep and Jesus Christ superstar are definetly my favorites.

Oh and Cats, how could I forget cats

I have to agree with those who said Andrew Lloyd Weber is not the greatest. To me, he got cheesier and more grandiose and overplayed as he progressed. Jesus Christ Superstar is by far his best work. Evita would come close. Pretty much everything else is overblown. Phantom needs some tweaking, and it could be a great show. At points it's very moving, and at others I want to walk out. Cats is pure drivel, great for kids and that's about it. No offense to those who liked Cats ;) Although it did employ many a dancer for 20some odd years ;)

I am a trained theatre performer and his work is not thought of very highly in the business. If you walk into an audition and say that you're going to sing "Memory" from Cats (which is incredibly hard, so few people should attempt it, plus it's overdone), they will laugh at you and not bother to give you an audition- seriously.

PS- I would like to add- Andrew Lloyd Weber did not write "Miss Saigon". The two French guys (Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg) who wrote Les Miserables, did it.

While I haven't seen much of his work what I have I have loved.
I am a hardcore, pureblood Phan who still attempts to strangle people saying I look a little like the latest interpretation of "Raol" so really I am forced to say Phantom,
I am forced to say that, I haven't seen "Superstar"
but I like Joseph.
And thanks to a fluke I haven't been able to see POTO on Broadway yet so I am not your best judge of plays
I love what I have seen of Webber :)
